I have to make a box of chocolates cake for a Valentine Anniversary. They want the box open with the chocolates inside. My question is, I have looked at several pictures on here of them and wonder how is the top cake supported. I wonder will it just lay there covered in fondant at the slanted angle or does it need a board underneath to keep from bending?

Any help or tips appreciated.

Thanks in advance,

Vicki

I would use a board. Or, if you have time to order one, you can purchase a chocolate mold for a box. I have one and it's very cute. You can make a box out of chocolate, fill it with chocolates, and set it on top of a cake

oh...you will definitely need a board underneath! you can use one of your cake boards and cut it to size.

I would say...depending on the angle you want the top of the box to be off of the cake you may want to just support it with some dowels or straws. if you are having the box top off to the side maybe make a styrofoam wedge to go underneath it?? I have not done it before...but i have done the shoebox cake...and i just used dowels to prop it up. in your case, depending on if the box is going to have a lip or edge...you may want to just do the dowels as far under the box top as possible so you don't see them.

Good luck! icon_biggrin.gif

you could make the top of the cake out of fondant or gumpaste ahead of time and let it dry, but if you use cake, you're going to need a board underneath the cake to support it.

Hi Vickie
I looked at some of the pics of candy boxes and some of decorators of the cakes said they used styrofoam and covered it in fondant and one decorator used popcicle sticks to prop up the lid. I heard too you could use dowel rods to support the lid. I hope this helps. You could also PM some of the decorators and ask them questions on how they did them. Most people on here are good about helping you out. Good Luck!!

Thanks again,

I have just uploaded a cake like this I did for xmas........I constructed the lid on a thin board as when I was doing the lid I tried it without the board and it started to bend so you definately need a board

I don't know if you've made this cake yet, but bakerella just posted a box of chocolates on her blog today with directions. It looks awesome. I want to try it now. for the lid you could use cardboard covered with fondant and make the lip of the lid similar to the lip around the box. http://bakerella.blogspot.com/2009/02/valentines-day-gift-box-of.html
