My daughter want's a Happy Feet (the penguin) birthday. I've seen a lot of really cute penguin cakes here on CC. Most have used the tinted piping gel for the water and I am planning on doing that as well, however I'm wanting to have it look like the ice berg with the water along side... has anyone ever used jello with a cake. I'm thinking of stacking the jello on top of my cake ??? is whether to do it before or after I ice it. I've got it crumb coated now and I'm making the jello now... in case I decide to go that route which is where I'm leaning. (I know I should have made it last night but it got away from me.) I've seen a Jello Elmo on top of a cake in a wilton book... will have to go dig that up.

Anyway.... Attached is a drawing of my idea and I want to have water all to the one side and the Ice Berg to the other. Anyone have any suggestions????

Thanks!!

- Paula

Also, if I put on the icing will the color of the jello in this case, blue fade into the icing? I am icing the bottom in an icy blue color anyway so maybe that won't matter.

Again,.. any suggestions or comments welcome!! Thanks!!
LL

(Wow, actually a thread where I can answer rather than ask the question icon_surprised.gif )

Ok, you know the blue and white sharks? Well, if you melt those, the color is great for water. Plus, since is isn't BC/fondant/something typical, you get a unique texture.

Hope this helps.

This sounds great except I have to make this for tomorrow and I don't have any of those sharks. But thank so much for the suggestion. I'll keep it in mind for the next cake I make that needs water.

Thanks again!!

Maybe you could find something in the candy aisle at the grocery store that would work. Maybe you could find some gummy candies there that would work for you.

I bet if you go to the Woman's magazine w/ all those cakes they'd have something - I KNOW they've used jello as water before. I'll see if I can find a link - I think it's Women's Day.....

Here's what I ended up with, however the party got postponed not once, but twice.... first due to the flu running through our family, (it's gotten 4 out of 6 of us) then due to a power outage due to the wonderful weather again here in STL! UGH!!! Now I don't know if I can still freeze this cute cake, obviously I'll loose the water portion as it's a jell-o jiggler.... Help!

Oh, I can't get it to post the pic without resizing it, and I'm still whipped from this flu thing... please check my gallery and give me your thoughts and ideas for keeping this cake till next Saturday or am I just going to have to make it all over again.... My daughter is already so disappointed about the party postponed again and I know since she helped on this she'll just fall apart as a headstrong 5 year old little girl will do... icon_cry.gificon_cry.gificon_cry.gif (that's me crying, not her! )

Thanks!

PS the only great part of this holiday weekend was the wonderful miracle of Shawn and Ben found alive. Absolutely amazing... an angel was on their shoulders... or maybe it was Ben as an angel sent to find Shawn. The good Lord works in mysterious ways.

This is a really cute cake. I am sorry to hear that you and your family have been sick. I love that your little one helped you to make the cake. Maybe soon you will have a little decorating partner. icon_smile.gif

I'm sorry but I don't know about freezing the cake. I'm not sure that the jello would hold up. Maybe someone else can be of more help to you.

I haven't had a chance to check your cake, but I'm sure it'll work out great.

Here's my experience with jello on a cake. I made a swimming pool cake last year using it.
I made the cake, stacked and torted it. I then cut out a small amount of cake where the water would go. Then I made up the blue raspberry jello, and made it thick, like the jiggler recipe. I then watched it very closely until it got to almost solid state, where it was very thick gel. I then poured it into the cut out part of the cake and put the cake in the frige to set it up. It heldup very well and didn't oooze out when it was cut and served. The kids loved that part of the cake and fought over who was going to get the water!

you could try and use rock candy for the iceburg. They make it in clear. you would have to get this at a candy store. Good luck with cake.

I just made the jell-o jiggler recipe on the back of the box. I then cut it to fit my cake shape and bordered it with the icing as it kept wanting to slip off the cake. I wanted the under part to be white so I did not cut out a section for it to fit into which probably would have been better as it kept wanting to slide off the cake. As for the waterfall it's just the piping gel with the blue and I let my daughter do that and she scooped out a lot of blue and before I noticed she was mixing away. It worked out well though as you can read the writing. I had so much I went around the cake board and stuff.... not really what I had in mind but she helped and she loved it! Guess that's all I can really ask for. Now if I can just salvage and save it for this weekend. icon_redface.gif

Thanks!
