I think they use things like nutriwhip, its a non dairy whipped topping that you whip yourself.
The grocery store I work for uses a pre whipped topping called BETTERCREAM it is made by Rich's. If you have a Sams Club near by you can buy a whole bucket for like $22.00 that is already whipped. Just go to the bakery dept. and ask for it.
Hope this info helps.

That is good to know I have tried to use things on an ice cream cake with no luck but I never asked them to sell me some. I guess that makes sense. Do you know if any one other than Baskin Robbins has quarts to buy? Also do you know how long it lasts?

Not sure of anyone else who sells it but it wouldn't hurt to ask the bakery at your local grocery store.
Would they sell the same stuff you use on an icecream cake? Is it the same thing as they use in a bakery? I wish I could just make the stuff myself.

You could always try this stabilized whipped cream recipe. I think that will give you similar results but I haven't tried it yet.
