This is my 1st try, with making a gumpaste rose. I used Rosemary Watson's video (which I converted to DVD). I also used Jeff's picture tutorial on how he makes gumpaste roses. I want to make the flower formers. I haven't made them yet. I did use spoons though.

I live in Hawaii, where it's quite humid, but these dried and harded. Thank you to everyone on this forum who helped me with getting fixodent and tylose. I really appreciate it!

I am very jelous, I have made several roses from fondant/ gumpast, and none come close to being this beautiful. If this is how you start out, I will be very amazed after you have had practice.

Thank you! I tried making the base of the gumpaste before, but because it's humid here it turned into mush. Now that I have a gumpaste that won't react to humidity. I finally tried this out.

Have you checked out Rosemary Watson's video? I have the magazine where she shows how she makes her roses. I can scan it, if you want?

Wonderful job Leilani. I actually like yours better than Rosemary's, they aren't as stiff or rigid as hers. I just read back on your post and see you didn't make the former. I think the former is what makes the petals look too stiff and pointed, the spoons give a softer more natural look to them.

Smart to convert that VHS tape. If you ever come across her Bakers Dozen or her Lace Wraps tapes you should grab them if they are affordable. I have seen them go for big money on eBAY.

Thanks ShirleyW! I actually have Rosemary's Baker Dozen video too! I got it before she closed her website. I don't have all her cutters etc. It's a great video though!

This is a beautiful rose. I have made a few, but they aren't very good. What is Jeffs picture tutorial? And where can I get it? You did a fantastic job.

You did such a very, very beautiful job on your rose and for the first time? I haven't even touched gumpaste roses yet. I'm still learning buttercream and royal icing roses. You did a superb job. You should give yourself a pat on the back. icon_biggrin.gifthumbs_up.gif

Wow. It truly is beautiful. Good job. Can you please tell me which recipe you used because I also live in a humid country and often end up with mushy roses.

SEAQUEEN I had a CK gumpaste mix. I added about 2 TBSP of tylose to it. I also knead a little bit of fixodent (powdered version) into the gumpaste before I roll it out.

I'm going to try the Nicolas Lodge recipe, which is really good for humid places.

Yep, Momkiksbutt. I use Fixodent which help my gumpaste dry and harden in humid areas.

How much Fixodent do you use?

Since Fixodent comes in a bottle. I just sprinkle a little on it. I knead it a couple of times. I add a little more and knead it again.

You should look at Jeff's picture tutorial too. I followed that, since he has about 5 or 6 rows of petals.

Ok, here's a totally noob GP question....are you using the fixodent as a tylose replacement? Or just as an aid in the drying because of humidity?

If it's a good substitute for tylose, well then Woohoo!! Just curious. I find the gumpaste mix sort of expensive for the amount you get in the Wilton brand. That's why I haven't bought any in a while.

If anyone has any good priced places that they get theirs, please share with me..... icon_smile.gif

Thanks for the site. The only thing I didn't see on that site was how thin do you roll the gumpaste?
