I want to take a shot at making a purse cake. I wanted to know if there is a mold out there for the zipper? plus the rope border? Or it people just make it piece by pice from gumpaste or fondant? If anyone has directions or can point me in the direction I would really appreciate it. Thanks

I wish i could help you - it is a really good question. Perhaps you could PM someone who is skilled at making the purse cakes and post the response here?

I hope I can give you the the right directions! This is for a rounded purse but I suppose it would be the same for all shapes. Take a piece of fondant(or whatever you are using) cut it more narrow than the top of the cake where the zipper goes. So the center of the zip would be placed smack in the middle of the top but not as long. Wilton makes something called a cutter/embosser and with that you can put little teeth marks on both sides of the zipper or if you have a stainless steel triangle or even a toothpick you can make the marks. Hope this helps.

Interesting . . . thanks, fearlessbaker. I've been wondering how to do that. Now I just have to figure out how to sculpt the zipper tab itself - i'm planning to make one for a friend's birthday next month.

Go to www.justfabulouspastries and then to very special occassions and then(are you tiredyet?) ultra feminine cakes. Look at the LV handbag. It's the first cake on the right side. You should be able to print that out by clicking on it and then once that single window comes up right click on the image to print on it.

My partner and I did a LV purse to match my daughter's LV for her 21st Birthday. You can view this under my photos. We used tip 44 or you could use 47 and just went back and forth to make the zipper teeth in a closed pattern. Hope this helps.

I took lots of phots of the purse and we use ediable markers and drew each by hand. It has the same pattern as the real one.

Hey!
I have step by step instructions on my Dooney purse.. send me your email address and I will send them to you.. my zipper was made by the cutter/embosser set.. you can get one at walmart for like 3 bucks.. You can also us the set for the edges of the handle to make it look like it has a stitch..As for the rest.. I used a piece of wax paper, layed it on cake after the icing had crusted and made templates for my fondant.. I imprinted DB with my message letter press.. You can also get those at walmart.. and just piped them in with colored Buttercream..

I also used a stitching wheel from the sewing department to get the look of stiching. I would suggest putting dowels through the cake to help it stand up better. Make sure the dowel is atleast 1" into the cake. We found that as the cake settled, the dowels starting popping through the top and the cake wanted to lean back. Also make the bottom layer a tiny bit bigger then the rest. We stacked and iced the whole thing with a crumb coat. Then freeze to firm up and then cut into shape, it will hold together better.

Good luck.

I made a zipper mold out of FIMO or Sculpty clay. I bought a coat zipper at the fabric dept. Roll out a long strip of clay, press the zipper, top side down into the clay and then carefully pull it off. Bake your clay according to package directions. When it's cool, press a long strip of fondant into the mold and carefully lift out. I then used silver luster dust to color it. Good luck!

Suebee, Thanks for the tip on the dowels. I am planning on making a larger purse cake next month. I am just a tak confused how to do this. How many did you use for your cake. Am I right that you cut them shorter than you normaly would and that you put them in vertically? Sorry, I always need everything spelled out for me. Thanx

Yes your right, you put the dowels down through the top of the cake after it has been stacked. Three would be good. Not to close to the edge because you need to carve the shape.
