I love this and thank her so much for sharing! This is the smoothest I've ever been able to get my icing. I need to get a larger roller. The one I have is only a 4 inch because that's all Wally World had. It works GREAT though. Try it, you'll like it icon_biggrin.gif

do you roll over something though....I just cant picture it....do you have to worry about the roller being food safe? I have really been wanting to try it though....I bet if I used it over parchment paper or viva that it would still work just as well (wouldnt it)?

I used it dry directly on the cake. It was great. I much prefer it to the Viva and printer paper techniques. I wish I'd have posted a photo of my cake when I posted the original thread. I was putting the writing on the cake (black, of course) and dripped a big glob on the side of the cake because the bag I used split.....argh. Of course, I had already started decorating the side so wasn't able to smooth it out as good as it was when I began decorating.

I tried this today, & it left a texture on the icing. It did help, but I still had to hot knife it.

When you develop your film, ask them to put the photos on a disk for you, then you can simply upload them. All the pharmacies here offer that option. icon_smile.gif

Just curious... did you let the icing crust REALLY REALLY well? Because I noticed that if the icing wasn't dry enough, it did leave a texture. That's why I have to let it crust for at least 20 minutes (more if humid). You can also use the viva towel under the roller. Just lay towel on cake and roll so that you don't leave finger dents.

I used the foam roller on the pink iPod Nano cake in my photos and it worked great. I let it crust and then rolled lightly and got a very smooth finish.

Melvira -YOU ROCK!!!!!!! That is the most awesome tool in my arsenal now. I did 3 cakes on Saturday and every one of them had the most professional finish to them. My husband has been after me to get my cakes smoother (he's my critic! LOL) and he had NOTHING to say after seeing your cute little trick. I was only able to find the 4" roller at our walmart but will be checking in with the supercenter in the next town over. Thank you thank you thank you for sharing such as spectacular tip with all of us on CC!

Hi everyone. This technique sounds interesting and really does sound like it would work. But I have to admit that I'm hesitant to use the foam roller directly on the icing because of the food safety issue. I know that it's not FDA approved for using it with food so even though I want to try it out, I have some reservations. Anyone else with reservations on using this tool for this purpose or am I just being overly cautious???

butternut, I had the same concern...so I simply used the roller over parchment paper......still worked great and I had the added assurance that it wasnt touching my cake!

Butternut I can totally understand your social conciousness. I washed mine very well with dishsoap and hot water before using and I do not feel uncomfortable with using it. BUT... for those who do, (and that is your right to worry!!) I suggest using the technique with a viva paper towel on top of the icing. (Have those been deemed safe for food use by FDA??? I have NO idea!! icon_redface.gif ) Anyway, if those are ok, then you can benefit by this technique without any worry about possible contamination. I do have to say that I can not see ANY reason why using it directly on the cake could be harmful, but I am NOT a scientist, so I could easily be ignorant in this area! Good luck and I hope you find a good solution that works!!

Thanks so much for your replies. I really appreciate it. I did also have a question about using Viva paper towels at first. So, I wrote to Kimberly Clark and asked them about the safety of using paper towels directly on top of the icing and I received a response from them. I'll copy and paste what I received. Thanks again, everyone.

Thanks for your e-mail about KLEENEX® VIVA® paper towels.

Please be assured this product is made with 100% virgin wood fiber. Our paper towels are designed for a wide variety of household wiping and cleaning purposes. If used for food preparation, we recommend that consumers use white (unprinted) paper towels.

Thanks again for your e-mail.

Yes Melvira, I did mean in the honest way, not being mean at all! As a matter of fact - no ONE else is supposed to criticize even a crumb of anything I make! But he takes care to let me know when its not up to snuff!

Haha! I know exactly what you mean, my sister and I are like that! We can call each other fat, ugly, bee-hatches, but if someone else says that either of us has a hair out of place we are all claws and teeth! Isn't it funny the way we are? Human nature is about the weirdest thing on earth!

Great info on the paper towels Butternut! You really have your act together! Very thorough! Thank you for sharing that with us, so we can all benefit from your research! Sometimes there is such a grey area, like luster dust. I created a thread on that a while back because it said you shouldn't eat it, but they said it was edible and I kept seeing these cakes done by 'professionals' on TV and in books that were covered with the stuff! Confusing!! icon_eek.gif That's just like dragees... they say they are totally safe and edible, but they say you shouldn't eat them. Huh? icon_confused.gif Well, I wasn't going to sit down and eat them like M&M's... but if I ingest three of them on a piece of cake I'll be ok, right? icon_rolleyes.gif There are so many questions. Thank goodness we have CC to help us in these areas!

I just tried the sponge roller last night. Awesome-perfectly smooth cake! Sorry I don't have a cake to post because DH cut into it. He couldn't wait. LOL He could smell the caramel. I flavored the cake mix with the vanilla caramel creamer. That stuff is to die for! Great tips on this site.
