There really aren't instuctions, per se.... folks use candy clay, fondant, marzipan, or rolled butter cream to do the figurines. Kind of like playing with play dough.

techniques same as for polymer clay. (except we can eat ours!)

if have friend into that, he/she may have book on it.

here's something from Carol Duvall show on HGTV -- a long list of figures to make w/ instructions.

HGTV: clay figures

and another page: (scroll down and look on right) HGTV: Clay Basics

I'm tellin' ya -- i have learned SO many techniques that can be applied to fondant by watching the polyclay people on her show!

and here's HGTV's main clay crafts page HGTV: Clay Crafts

SO many ideas!

I found some stuff at pastrywiz.com too. I'm having trouble w/ making a figure that is standing up - things just keep gong wrong w/ him. Especially my dimensions!!! His head looks funny to me. I'll have to post a pic. when I'm all done. Then I made a little golf cart for him (oh yeah he's a golfer) and the golf cart is so small the guy would never fit in it!! I just don't know how to make it a lot bigger w/out it looking stupid too...... well anyway good luck! I just bought a Sculpey book from ebay too and I'm excited to try some of those techniques too.

One of my biggest problems is tools. I don't think Wilton's set of sculpting tools are the greatest. I found some that looked good on pastrychef.com but they seem so expensive! So I'm still looking for good tools.......

And supports! I'm using spaghetti right now as support for my figure but I think it's too thin.. I don't know how others do it - maybe my fondant is just really soft. But then I added powdered sugar and now it isn't really smooth - there are cracks in it that I can't get rid of - and it's sticky - I'm just having problems!!! I'm using the Wilton fondant b/c that's really the only thing I can get locally other than Satin Ice in the huge tubs - and I think the Satin ice smells like play doh - I wasn't too impressed by it.

Anyone else experience similar issues & have any tips?

I haven't made a lot of fondant figures but the few I have done I used toothpicks as supports. I found that if you let the pieces dry just a little on their own that when you tried to attach them it would work better. Also, for the cracks, I would add some crisco to my hands and rub onto the fondant. Seemed to help with the cracks and some with the stickiness. Good luck, hope I helped some.
