Banquet Hall Ruined Fondant Cake?
Decorating By adonisthegreek1 Updated 3 Jun 2007 , 3:44pm by keepontryin
I recently heard a couple of people state that the banquet hall removed the fondant from their cakes before cutting and serving them. Has anyone here experienced this? That sounds pretty presumptuous of the hall. I am going to be making a 3-tier fondant covered cake soon. Do I need to tell the hall not to remove my fondant and let the guests decide whether they want to peel it off or not. I plan to cover my cake in Satin Ice or a fondant from cocoa outlet, not the cheap, yucky stuff so I definitely don't want it carelessly discarded by a server.
yep, heard and even in saw it on FoodTV show about Disney weddings --- they took it off, considered just for show
That is just weird. I love fondant. I would have been ticked to not get some on my piece.
Obviously, these people have never eaten MMF .
I would definitely ask the hall how your cake will be handled/served. It's always good to be on top of it!!!
If I were a guest and they served me a piece with the fondant peeled off, I'd wonder what they were doing back there.... it would just seem weird.
I think fondant is a personal preference. It should be up to the person putting it in their mouth whether or not they want it , not the person serving it. I would definitely let them know ahead of time not to take the fondant off. I wonder if they do it to make it easier to serve??
I never heard of such a thing, all that hard work peeled off. I agree the guests should have the chose to eat or not to eat the fondant. If I were a bride & paid a tons of miney for a cake & then they peeled it off I'd be so upset.
That's gross! Fondant is perfectly eatable, even the hated Wilton's. People who make a big fuss about it are just plain rude. If you don't care for something, eat around it.
The only excuse I can come up with is that the banquet hall in question has been misinformed about correct procedures in serving a fondant cake.
Just did a quick search... Is fondant removed from cake prior to serving:

Really depends on the facility. Most places around here peel it off unless you request otherwise. So many people (yes even banquet halls) aren't really that familiar to what fondant really is, and just peel it off thinking people wont find it palatable. So no...not unheard of. Actually I think its more common place than leaving it on.
Yikes! I had never heard of such a thing. I'm glad this topic came up. I use a fondant here in Toronto by a local company called McCaul's. I find the fondant quite yummy, and woud like to think that the guests would have the chance to choose for themselves. Thanks for bringing this up. I'll add it to the LONG list of things to check on in the future.
I believe there was a post here on CC quite some time ago from a disgruntled cake maker - where the caterers/kichen staff took it upon themselves to strip the fondant from the cake and once they'd done their work the cake no longer looked presentable / recognisable / or like anything you'd want to eat.
Maybe it's a good idea to discuss it with the bride and then have one of the two of you instuct the kitchen.
