Good afternoon everybody!
I subscribe to brides.com because it's a great way for me to keep up on what's new in wedding cakes, plus I want to know what prospective wedding cake customers will already have seen in case there's a new technique I need to learn, etc etc.
One of the things I get is e-mail "Brilliant Idea of the Day" which normally are great little tips and hints for wedding plans.
Today's "Brilliant Idea" tells brides to "Order a square wedding cake to save money. It'll yield more slices than a traditional round one."
DUH do these people not understand that wedding cakes are priced by the serving count?? How is that going to save anyone any money?
I've half a mind to write them and complain - if I could just figure out how to do it!
Thanks for letting me vent!
The only way I can see you save money on the square is because maybe you would need less layers of cake b/c each layer will feed more people than with a round - so there might be less "decorating" charges. I think it would only affect additional charges though such as flowers, gumpaste, fondant, etc. decorations.... just a little less to decorate. Still.... NOT a way to save Big Money! I saw write them!
OK, OK, I can see your point...although for me I'd charge extra for square because the corners can be a to do
Plus what self-respecting bakery or cake decorator would charge the same for a square as a round....it takes about 30% more in ingredient cost alone!
Still trying to find a feedback button....
Found a "contact us" - so I contacted. Here's what I said:
Hello
I am a wedding professional in the business of wedding cakes. I subscribe to your site and various newsletters because it helps me in my business to keep up with trends.
Today I received one of the "Brilliant Idea of the Day" e-mails which I feel required a comment. Your suggestion to brides to "Order a square wedding cake to save money. It'll yield more slices than a traditional round one" completely misses the mark. Yes - a square cake will serve more people. However there are very few wedding cake professionals who don't price the cake by the serving count. The bride will pay for the serving count of the cake, not by the shape, which will in the end NOT save her any money. A square cake requires about 25 to 30 percent more in ingredient cost alone. I can't imagine any cake professional absorbing that cost difference.
Please consider a retraction or a follow-up. We certainly would not wish to have brides disappointed because they were advised a square cake would be more cost-effective.
Thank you for your attention, and as always, I appreciate your website and access to all the information contained therein.
Sincerely
yada yada yada
I'm not expecting any kind of reply, but maybe there will be a result....maybe!
Very professional and very good! I think it may open their eyes a bit - they should at least give you a reply as to WHY they think a square cake would cost less....
Thanks - after I submitted there was some type of statement that due to the high volume of contacts they receive, basically I shouldn't expect any kind of response. WHATEVER!
I'd just be happy with one of next week's "Brilliant Idea of the Day" mentioning how wrong they were to suggest such a silly idea in the first place
Got a response....mind you - it was kind of a generic response, but considering I hadn't even expected THAT, I'm happy to have one at all.
"Hello Elisabeth --
Thank you for your comment -- I am going to share this with other editors.
Best and thank you for using Brides.com.

so...cool, huh?
I'm suprised that they responded (with the high volume and all ) I hope it leads to them printing a correction.
I remembered you had posted this and couldn't find this post again. GLad you updated us.
When cake central was down I was looking all over the interenet and one of the sites stated about wedding cakes that Square was usually going to cost a little more because of how long it takes a decorator to get the corners sharp and have the square cake be level and look nice.
I wish I could remember what site I saw this on-maybe you could forward it I do remember it was a highly known name... just can't remember where it was
