Okay, this may sounds really odd but I bought a 50 pound block of high-ratio shortening. I need to store it in something once I open it. I found some 5 gallon plastic buckets with lids at the store. Would these be safe for storage of something that will be eaten?

Thanks so much for any insight.

I think so, but you could line it with some kind of food safe bag if you are worried. You might want to store in the fridge if you aren't going to use it within a few months. This stuff goes bad and turns yellow if it sits in a hot room.

I don't know about that. But before I put any food in anything I f\inse it our with boiling water. In your case, I would put what you have in a large ziplock and then the bucket. How does that sound? A good thing to have among your equipment is a food saver. You can get the bags on ebay at a good price. If you don't want to freeze it will suck most of the air out and then it will seal it tight.
