How exactly do you paint onto fondant? I know you use lemon extract but then what? Do you mix it in with the concentrated gel color or do you dilute it with water? Could someone please clue me in? Thanks in advance!

You mix gel/paste color with the lemon extract and paint with it.

Does it come out streaky? Does it look nice?

Do you know what the ratio of gel to extract? And do you have to paint it on in layers? Thanks.

You can also paint with a powdered food color and some of the dusting powders.

I think the ratio is 3 parts powder to 1 part lemon extract (any pure extract is fine - just not immitations). For the powders and dusts, you want to reach the consistancy of heavy cream, roughly.

paste and gel - trial and error. Extracts evaporate quickly (which is why they are better than water) so if you mess up and add too much, dont worry - you will be left with just your paste in a few minutes. Use a dropper, if possible, to add extract. Put paste in a little color tray or I use those little plastic containers from when I make iced tea, add a drop of extract, mix with tootpick, and give it a whirl!

Tip: if you get streaky, dont repaint right away. Wait a few minutes until its dry and then repaint until you get the finish you are looking for. Very matte finish you may have to go over it a couple of times.

I use grain alcohol when I paint. I put some in a plastic syringe (the kind you get with meds) and then use a small paint plate (little round indentations around a circle). I start with a small amount of Wilton paste colors and drop a few drops of alcohol into it. I use a small paint brush to blend and paint away. The alcohol will evaporate pretty quickly, that's why it's nice to have the syringe handy. I have a picture posted with palm trees that I used this technique on. Good luck!

I painted all the spots on this cake using a high alcohol volume lemon flavouring, Americolours egg yellow and Sugarflair dark brown. I put a drop of each on a plate and then just grabbed a bit of each with a brush and mixed it with the flavouring until i got the desired colour. It dried in a few seconds, and i think it looks pretty good. I panted the spots and the face of the giraffe using this method.
