Christmas Tree Cupcake Cake Question

I am making a christmas tree cupcake cake for my niece's christmas party on Friday. My question is do i first ice it with buttercream then put the stars on top of that? I just dont know how else to get the gaps between the cupcakes "filled".

You want to arrange your cupcakes as close together as possible. I'd start with one on top, then put two below that Three below those, layering them where each of the next row is fitting into the curve of the row above.

Make any sense?

Well it make sense (Sort of). I understand how you are saying to put them together. But won't it still leave a gap? Also Do you mean put the stars on each individual cupcake then put them together?

I too am making several of these for my kids school parties. They are really easy.
Place your cupcakes as close together in the shape that you want. Then just frost over the top like a regular cake. Unless your frosting is really thin, it won't fall in the spaces between the cupcakes. I use the big icing tip and never have any troubles.

..you might also start by putting a little icing or piping gel on the bottom of each cupcake before placing them on a cake board..this will help keep those buggers from moving around when you go to put on the icing!

Unless you squish them together really really close there are still going to be gaps between them. It won't hurt anything. I've never had icing sink into the gaps.

I'd ice it smooth on top like you do a regular cake. I'm not a big fan of making stars so I'd probably just ice in green and decorate it. If you still want to do stars I'd do a layer of icing underneath, just to give you a smooth flat surface to work with.

If your BC is med.consistency you should have no problem with the gaps between them. I also agree with MrsMissey put some icing or piping gel on the bottom of each cupcake.

You also want to make sure that your cupcakes are level. You can place a pan on top of them when they come out of the oven to help ensure that they are.
