I got this crazy idea, but will it tast good?

Red velvet cake and white cake either marbled together or in the zebra pattern. I am thinking it will look much like a candycane cake, but do you think it will taste alright?

Hey luv2cake...I was wondering the same thing myself!! icon_biggrin.gif I was wanting to do a candycane cake too with red velvet and white. I want to torte them and stack it red, white, red and white (is that a zebra pattern??...lol icon_redface.gificon_lol.gif I don't have a clue).

I think that I'm going to try it. It sounds yummy to me. Hugs, ~Denise

I think it will taste awesome!! I tried to do a zebra cake by following a site someone had posted here. I didn't use the recipe because it was a bit unusual so I used my own batter. It was tedious, and it still looked marbled more than striped. Do you have any tips?

I want to try the zebra cake but just use white cake and color one with red food coloring and add peppermint extract to one of the cakes! Just haven't had time! Would it be too much to add peppermint to the icing too?

I too have those instructions that were posted on here. I haven't tried it yet, but I thinkI will today. Yes, it sounds tedious, but the picture looks sooo cool. I am going to give ita try. I can let you know how it turns out. But I have no great tips or advice yet.

Here's what we are talking about if anyone is wondering: http://cakefun.blogspot.com/2005/08/zebra-cake_25.html

I'm doing a cake for a reception at our church this Sunday. I think I'm going to try the idea of adding red food coloring and pepperment flavor to it. I made a Mint Chocolate Chip cake a few weeks ago. My son took it to school for the football guys. They loved it. The peppermint cake would be perfect for this Sunday. I'll let you know how it is. I'm going to try a sample cake tonight just to make sure.

Hi,

Those are the directions I followed but not the recipe...The problem I had was this my batter was too thick. I think the one she uses is runnier. When I did what it says to scoop one color then the other mine didn't spread like hers it just kind sat there on top of the previous color. So I gently smoothed it out. I did that until the pan was full, but it looked nothing like the bullseye of batter shown. When I cut the cake in some spots it looked stripped but mostly it looked marbled. Please let me know if you have a different experience because I too love the look of the cake!

How about if u make a sheet cake and marble the colours, then once its baked, torted and filled, you cut out shapes like the real zebra cakes from Little Debbie and then pour white chocolate ganache all over then and then stripe with chocolate ganache or coloured white chocolate ganache...

Can't wait to hear how it turns out gilson6. It's so funny-we are all worried about getting the bullseye and not marbled and I think the people eating it would be wowed one way or the other! We are so hard on ourselves sometimes! icon_lol.gif

I love the stripes!! I think the trick must be runny batter......

blittle6 - yeah, I am not going to use her recipe for the cake either.....maybe that is the whole key to acheiving the zebra look. I am just going to use a couple of cake mixes, and yes, they do tend to be thicker.

Maybe instead of spreading the batter around after you layer it in the pan, maybe you could slap it on the counter a couple of times to get it to stay in it's pattern, yet spread to fill the pan????

Be sure to post how it turns out for you....I'd like to try again....I didn't use but a scratch recipe and the batter was really thick also. I wonder if banging it would do the trick......PLEASE LET ME KNOW!!!

Okay. Here are my results from by experiment with the Red and White zebra cake.....

I made a 1/2 sheet cake and the zebra pattern wasn't really noticed because the pan was so big. It did give it a really cool marbled look though.

I had left over batter and id the same technique in a smaller pan and it worked great! I was so excited. Yes, it takes a while to do, but it looks so cool.

I did have to shake the pan back and forth to get the cake mix to spread out. Worked fine though.

That's great to hear! Did it resemble the candy cane?

Yeah it kinda did. The spacing and thicknesses of the colors was very random, but at this time of the year anything red and white looks like a candy cane. I was happy with it.
