Fabric Ribbon And Buttercream

I'm doing a cake for this weekend...and will be using a fabric ribbon aruond the middle of the cakes.

In the past I have always cut a strip of Fondant that sits between the buttercream and the ribbon, so there is no "grease" stain on the ribbon.

Anyone else have a better method of accomplishing this? It gets time consuming cutting out the fondant and then attaching it to the cake and then attaching the ribbon to the fondant.

I know there are some old posts on here about just this problem, just don't quite remember where! Try a quick search. Maybe use the terms fabric and ribbon and buttercream.
This search engine is a little particular so you may have to try some different wording!

It was suggested here to use some freezer paper...use the wax side...and iron the ribbon on the paper...then cut out around the ribbon. This works great!!!

I asked the same question a few months ago and some very helpful person suggested clear contact paper. (You can find it at wal-mart in the shelf lining section, same place you get the non-skid mats for your cake boxes!) You cut a strip around the cake to serve as a barrier between the buttercream and the ribbon, It works great!!

Attach wax ppr strip to the side of the ribbon that touches the cake

Doesn't contact paper have a glue of some sorts? Would it be food safe, even if the backing was left on?

What about running Scotch tape along the back side?

I've never done that before, but that's just what came to mind.

The wax paper idea is interesting...the wax doesn't stain the ribbon???

Nope, it doesn't stain a bit...it works great!! Even when you've finished using the ribbon on the cake...you can peel the freezer paper off and re-use the ribbon if you like.

The kind I bought didn't (static cling or something kept it to the backing. Oooooohhhh science.) But if you buy the kind with glue on it, stick the sticky side to the ribbon and wrap it around the cake so the safe side is on the cake. icon_wink.gif

Here's my question..how do you attach the two ribbon ends and the back of the cake?

I think you can overlap them a little and secure the ends with a dot of icing. If I'm wrong at least this bumps you up!

When I used ribbon on a cake, I used double sided tape to attach a strip of wax paper to the ribbon and wrapped around the cake- to secure the ends, I overlapped the ribbon and used another small piece of double stick tape. It worked really well!

that tape is often used for carpeting...it is super sticky!!!!

The doublestick tape I used is actually intended for scrapbooking or photo albums- I believe it was just Scotch brand- It worked like a dream!
