Hi and welcome to the board!! It's addictive! icon_twisted.gif A good place to start is to take a class at your local hobby lobby, michael's, jo ann's... But if you don't have time... I would just research, research, research. Enter in keywords for what ever you think of into the search here on this site and you will probably find a thread where someone else asked the same question you have. As far as recipes go... I prefer mixes. I know I'll get flamed for this. There are a lot of die hard scratchers on here, and there isn't anything wrong with that. But, I think Duncan Hines mixes just taste better. They are moister and easier. I'm not sure why anyone would want to do it the hard way to have an end product that doesn't IMO taste as good. But, that is JMO icon_wink.gif

Sugarshack has an awesome recipe for buttercream. You can do a search for it by typing sugarshack into the search. You can also watch her make it on you tube. There are many, many videos on cake making on you tube.

I'm sure some else will jump in here with a lot more ideas!

Good luck and again WELCOME!! icon_biggrin.gif

Welcome, to the club. Practice, practice, practice. Be sure and follow the directions, if it's from scratch or from the box, follow the directions to the T.This is one of the very best sites in the world. All of the cake folks(scratch&box) are extremely helpful all you have to do is ask. Good Luck

First and foremost have fun...seriously..

I would say that the two most important things to tiered cakes are construction and base icing...that's not to say that I've mastered them.

As far as delicious cake and icing recipes go...I search recipe sites and begin with recipes that have gotten a high rating or that sound delicious. There are many on CC that are most reliable and have been given the thumbs up by a considerable number of members...check out the recipe tab and search for your desired flavor.

Welcome! All the best to you!

A couple of sites/recipes that got me started on decorating a little over a year ago (Iâve been one of the die-hard scratch bakers for half of my life â that is before the decorating mania hit; now I do use doctored mixes sometimes, just because it is faster and leaves more time for the creative part, but I only like the Dr. Oetker organic series from Whole Foods, the Betty Crockerâs and such taste like pure chemicals to me.)

Best-tasting, easiest to make and most versatile Swiss Meringue Butter cream:

And if you do want to get deeper into the science behind baking or fix a disaster in the making:
www. b a k i n g 9 1 1 .com (skip the spaces, CC does not allow direct links to this site)

And then some books⦠Half of Amazonâs cake book inventories have made it into my house, plus I sill have about 30 on my wish list⦠Both on baking and decorating, but you can just go to a local bookstore (me luvs Half Priced books!) and just browse their selection, they would have something both on baking and decorating that would appeal to you to get you started.

Oh, and to get you started buy a set of good quality pans, not cheapo ones, as the pans do make a difference in how your cakes turn out!

Welcome to CC â hanging out in the forums for a few months youâll learn an unbelievable amount of tips and tricks from experience that few classes or books would ever tell youâ¦

Just make cakes and have fun is the bottom line! Best of luck!
