Hmmm..."science" is a pretty broad subject! I think your idea of experiments could work...beakers, bunsen burners, test tubes, etc. Could be fun!

Two things come to my mind, 1- microscope. 2- peroidic table. I figure he might not get the table one, but microscope would be cool. icon_smile.gif

How gross (and cool for an 8 year old) would it be to do a disected frog! I know, that goes beyond boundaries, but that is where my mind is most of the time! LOL

THis was for my son so I had a bit more control, but I got mini test tubes and beakers from the local teacher supply strore, filled them withdifferent types of candies and had them spilling over the cake. He asks for the same thing every year because it allows him new science supplies.

Here's a great website with fantastic science experients and wonderful science supplies on it. You can buy extra large test tubes and other fun items. Steve Spangler is the guy who invented the famous "Mentos and Diet Coke" trick! I'll bet you'll find some great ideas on his website.

By the way, so far this year I've volunteered to help in 9th grade Biology lab to dissect bullfrogs, HUGE rats, and fetal pigs! I'm the ONLY parent who has ever volunteered to help in Biology lab! I'm not sure what the other parents are really afraid of...maybe the teenagers?

Bugs in a jar would be great! Dissecting the frog, would be a little gross (for me), but the kids would TOTALLY dig it!

My daughter made a 3D Cell of a cake last year for her science class. they all had to make a 3d cell of whatever materials. We used a round cake with a cupcake on top for the nuculeus and candies for most of the other parts. Some of them she used bc with the 104 tip to do parts. I can't remember the names but you can get a pic of a cell online from a web site.

She got an A icon_smile.gif

Oooh, you know what else would be neat (and not so gross) would be a 3D RDNA strand...We used to make models of those all of the time in science classes. They are very colorful, too!

I don't know about the dissection ideas..... I'd have a tough time eating it - and if you have any kids that are animal lovers you may have some that are really upset over it.... especially young kids.....

however, I love the beaker idea and the one w/ the small test tubes and candies spilling out all over.... icon_smile.gif You could do a big beaker thing and then have some fondant or gumpaste "splashes" coming out of it...... or how do they do that volcano cake you used to see on TV? That would be cool if you made it beaker-like and then they could add vinegar or whatever and have stuff "bubble up" out of the cake..... I'm not quite sure how that works but I always thought that commercial looked like it had some cool ideas.....

Ooh I think one had some dry ice that they put in a little container inside of the cake.... that could be cool too if you had a little "experiment" area w/ the dry ice coming out of it........ ooh I can't wait to see your pictures! icon_smile.gif

At the dollar store where we live they have gummy bugs in a package....I think it has 6 of them. When I think about everything everyone suggested....I imagine a large sheet cake covered to look like the periodic table with a microscope on top....a couple of spilled beekers or test tubes (with different neon colored frostings) some bugs in a jar or a gummy frog...and maybe even some small books about science (like some of the science masters like Einstien).....MAYBE the sheet cake could be a book....

Just spouting off....hope it helps!
