Narie - I grew up with a father who will try anything and made me try lot's of it too. As an adult I'll try absolutely nothing that's out of my comfort zone, haha. I'm just very squeemish by nature.

Ewwww...ditto on those little white things on chicken. My boyfriend gets so irritated that I "waste" a whole chunk of chicken by cutting them out! But to bite down on that...makes my skin crawl, and I won't touch another bite. So...it's either waste a little bit on the front end, pre-cooked, or waste a whole lot more later because I won't touch those leftovers either!

And the black spots on the fish creep me out also - it's rare that I order fish at a restaurant because you never know when it's going to come out with the skin still attached to half of it...yuck!!

My chicken's eggs I take them out because they're very strong. I never bother if I'm forced to use store-bought eggs...
When I first saw this post, I wondered if you were talking about this...

Okay, my 3 boys just saw that picture... the 5 yo said "what's sicker than that?" When it grosses them out, it's really gross!

I couldn't bring myself to read the whole thread, because I went 10 yrs without eating eggs after I found out where they came from. I don't eat honey because I call it "bee vomit". I eat eggs now, but every now & then, I just lose it & can't!

I am with you on the rabbit thing. When I was little my folks were poor and they actually wanted us to eat rabbit and squirrel. The part that kills me is that she could have done it so much smarter. She cooked the rabbit in one piece so it looked like a rabbit, ack(Poor Thumper!) If she would have cut it up/deboned, none of us prolly would have been the wiser! Needless to say me and my sisters went hungry that night=)

When I first read the initial post I thought "Hallelujah! I'm not the only freak!"

Throughtout the thread I've been guffawing like a hyena. icon_lol.gif

It's funny the things you do out of habit, thinking you're the only one.

I just about always take them out too because they gross me out to the core. I always use a fork too, I've got it down pat so it's quick and easy! lol

I also can't stand getting tenderloins because of that slimy stuff and I will gag if I'm eating shrimp that hasn't been deveined. Gross!!

This reminds me of when we were kids. My sister would not eat chicken legs/drumsticks because she said the veins were "monsters". icon_lol.gificon_lol.gif

I still don't eat them much either just because they are too veiny. Ick!

Don't even get me started on shrimp that isn't depooped! If I order shrimp at a restaurant, I expect it to have the poop shoot taken out. I cannot eat it with the poop still in...I DO NOT have a side of cow poopwith my steak, please do not serve me a side of poop with my shrimp! NASTY!!! I never thought about how many weird food aversions I really had til today!

Gee it'd take all day to go out with all of you for lunch! With all the things to aviod!! LOL And my family thinks I'm the weird one because I won't eat cucumbers!! Oh, no liver either! My mom used to fix it for dinner and we had to eat it. She STILL doesn't know what I really did with mine. Obviously my little sister didn't know either, or mom would. This has been a fun thread!

I didn't grow up with brothers, just 5 sisters, but we can get pretty gross. I think I missed something not having at least one brother though. If he could have survived with all of us.

Okay, since this topic is already so gross....let me ask a question?

I used an egg last week and there was this blood clot in it and it was in the egg white part of the egg.
Does anyone know what that was? The thing is that I have seen this before but this was the biggest I've ever seen.

Ewwww! That is gross SScakes! I have never had one of those in my eggs!icon_eek.gif Although, I do know someone who cracked open an egg one time and a dead half grown chick came out... I'm pretty sure they were fresh eggs though... probably one that had been forgotten for a while. icon_confused.gif Needless to say, for a while every time a cracked an egg I was just waiting to see a little chick pop out. I have actually heard of this happening a couple of times. But so far it has not happened to me. Thank Goodness! icon_biggrin.gif

THAT IS SO GROSS! lol this is far from what i thought this topic would be. i thought it was a forum about a egg shaped cake or something lol but it was very interesting although i think i'm gonna throw up. my stomach is very sensitive when it comes to slimy things *yuck*. i have never paid attention to "egg boogers" , hell..i don't even pay attention to eggs when i crack them. i worry about rinsing my hand after each egg i crack because the whites always get on me! and besides the fact that the sliminess..(if that's even a word) i think eggs taste nasty. eww..boogers..LOL

Me too! I moved to this rural "sheep" town 6 years ago....my husband is not allowed to eat lamb anymore. We see them everywhere!

OMG this thread is hilarious. And informative. I remove the egg boogers....but now that I know they are safe to eat....I might leave them in.
To be honest, I didn't really know what they were.....

SScakes- I quite often find blood clots in eggs. If that happens, I throw the whole egg out.

I heard you should not eat the egg and to throw it out if there is the smallest bit of blood in it. So I always crack my eggs in a separate bowl, make sure they are good, take the boogers out and then put them in the mixing bowl.

My God, you people need a lesson in biology. This thread has brought to mind an image of a bunch of grade-school girls out at recess, running around like crazed monkeys and screaming their heads off because there's a little pencil-sized grass snake in the grass. LOL

Blood Spots in Eggs
"Blood" and "meat" spots are caused by the rupture of a blood vessel on the yolk surface during formation of the egg or by a similar accident in the wall of the oviduct. Many factors contribute to the spots: breed, feed, condition of the hens, etc. Both chemically and nutritionally these eggs are fine to eat. They are food safe if the egg has been properly stored in the refrigerator.

If desired, use the tip of a knife to remove the spot. Source

If any of you would like a little basic education about the ingredients you're using and what functions they perform in cooking, two good starting places are Harold McGee's On Food and Cooking: The Science and Lore of the Kitchen and Shirley Corriher's Cookwise: The Secrets of Cooking Revealed . Both books have excellent, comprehensive information on eggs and they're both awesome, highly informative books.

You guys are too much!! As I have always understood that tiny spot of blood means that the egg was fertilized. It's not harmful, just a bit more protein. I never worry about that either. Forget taping a first-time-baker-bride-to-be making her own wedding cake (another thread) I think it'd probably be pretty entertaining just visiting all your kitchens and watching you deal with your eggs!! Not making fun really, this is just too funny!

Since this thread is now about all kinds of food aversions...does anyone else have a problem with fat on meat? I drive DH crazy because I HAVE to trim off every speck of fat off my steak. I will only eat bacon if it's crispy. Can't stand the slimy...UGH!!

Bloody eggs...ARGHHH!!! Maybe they're safe, but it reminds me of a line from Pulp Fiction..."Sewer rat might taste like pumpkin pie, but I'll never know, cause I'm not eating it!" (paraphrased to removed the bad words...lol)

Kello, I do exactly what you do with the separate bowl. I don't think I've ever come across blood, ick. Even if it is OK, the thought is just what gets me. Can't do it.

That's like my parents still eating chitlins during the holidays. YUCK YUCK GROSS! The fact that you have to literally clean out out the crap is enough for me! No amount of boiling and seasoning will change it for me psychologically and I'm OK with that. icon_lol.gif

Where's a puking smiley when you need one?

Oh yeah, Shelbur, I also can't stand excess fat on my meat. And that's part of the reason why I eat turkey bacon. Butterball makes a great one.

You guys are funny. I'm in my first trimester of pregnancy and thought at first this thread was going to make me sick. I never worry about "egg boogers". I've never even noticed them.

Do you guys realize that the eggs you eat aren't unformed baby chickens? They are just eggs that haven't been fertilized. Just like human women release eggs so do chickens. Their eggs just happen to be bigger and edible. Oh and I hear that ostrich eggs are really good.

I personally love eggs, but I'm not supposed to eat a lot of them. I have high cholesterol and the yolks are too high in fat and cholesterol.

As for food aversions I don't know how anyone can even consider eating clams or oysters straight from the shell. Yuck...too slimy. And squid....don't get me started. I have had clam chowder, but the clams were tiny and cooked very well.

Ha ha, I hate eating fat too! When I lived at home, my dad would always eat the fat for me because he didn't want it to go to waste. So, I kinda expected that my husband would do the same thing. Ha, what a laugh, he's just as averted to it as me! icon_lol.gif So, we tend to cook things until they are maybe a little overly done! And, we try to avoid doing that in front of my dad. icon_wink.gif
