Hello out there. I have been coming back to CC for about a month now and have finally decided that perhaps I am worthy of being a part of this community. Last Oct. I started the Wilton classes, finished all of them, and I'm now taking the new gumpaste class. I love everything that I am doing and I want to master everything involved! I think I have talent, but then I look at other cakes and feel like I don't know what I am doing and what makes me think that I can do this for $. With two toddlers around, it also gets a bit hard to do as much practicing as I would like.
I have started a website, gotten biz cards, even have 4 orders....only to find out that I can't have a legal home biz. %^*#$ I am very disappointed. Do I do it under the radar and hope for the best? Rent a kitchen? Or just forget about it (which is honestly a very hard thing to do considering I literally DREAM cakes).
I guess I am looking for some honest feedback and any info anyone might offer.
Thank you in advance and sorry if I sound like I am moaning (but I am ).
Depending on where you are, the fines for selling cake without a licensed business can be very expensive. Many decorators sell anyway, and accept the risks.
Taking 'donations' for ingredients is still selling.
A website is a red flag for the health inspectors.
That said, many decorators have 'see what I have done' websites with no information even hinting at sales.
Many use cards, but advertising can be a problem, if you are caught.
Renting a space is an excellent alternative, if you can find a place to make it work.
Thanks for the info. I was afraid you might say that. My husband wanted me to just go ahead and not worry, thinking ignorance is bliss, but I don't want problems.
