Do you mean how to apply the buttercream/ganache? Or how to decorate?
If it's how to apply the buttercream/ganache, I did it pretty much like a round cake- iced the top first- just plonked the stuff on (in my case I used SMBC) and covered the top until the icing was spilling down the sides, then applied loads of icing down all the sides. I started taking off the icing off the sides first by using a right angled ruler. Same method as other cake decorators who use a bench scraper, I just happen to use a ruler. When all the sides were straight, I proceeded to take off icing off the top to get it as level as I could. Then I covered in fondant.
To decorate- perhaps use the invitation as a guide? My customer sent me the paper plate that she was going to use and she wanted me to match the colours. I decided to match the design as well.
Here's my number one cake, It's my first number cake :)
HTH :)
