Hi everyone!

It's been one hell of a week here. Wednesday night my 7 year old nephew with mild cerebral palsy started having seizures and ended up in a coma. Over 24 hours he had 17 seizures that we know of and probably a few that we missed. He's in the hospital, since Thursday morning, and as of today is back to being himself. They have done a barrage of testing and we are awaiting the results now. Needless to say, up till about 3 minutes ago, we had a house full of people since family came from all over California for this emergency. Also, needless to say, all baking plans (fortunately just for family) were totally cancelled. So...that's where my life has been...hopefully you all have MUCH happier stories to tell about your week and lovely photos to share!

ACat what a week. Prayers for your nephew and family.

Matty I love your cakes and that is one lucky little girl. My favorite was the skull I could see doing that for my niece.

These are the cakes I made for my great nephew and niece.

They were simple cakes which was fine with me. I need to work on my writing among other things but the kids love them

Looking forward to seeing what every one else is making.

Happy Weekend,

A@marian64, if you ever try the skull cake, i would suggest painting the black outlines first, letting it dry and then fill in with colour. This should have been common sense, but i didn't do it! Lol.. I filled in before the black was dry and disaster!! So had to clean and repaint some areas. Thank you vodka!!!! To clean the gel paint, not to drink.. Though i was tempted because it was 2am and i was lonely decorating and frustrated by my own stupidity! Hahahha

ALol! Will definitely remember that and allow plenty of time. I usually am doing most of my cakes at the last minute and into the wee hours of the morning. And I would probably have done it the way you did.

Hi Cat,

I am so sorry to hear about your nephew, prayers going out for you and your family.

I have been working on my first Thomas the Train cake, and boy was it fun. Buttercream is usually my nemesis, but it actually went on without any problems this time! Thank Goodness!! Here it is!

Thomas the Train cake made for my nephew's 3rd Birthday. Buttercream and fondant. TFL

Thomas is made from Fondant, cut from a stencil.

AI'm guessing that Erin (of the skull cake) is a bit of a goth? Maybe a "cheerful goth" like Dethany Dendrobia, from the comic strip, On the Fastrack?

All the cakes look good. And that "Thomas" cake is most remarkable indeed.

And Cat, hang in there. Your nephew is in my prayers, that the doctors are able to get his condition under control.

As advertised, all I baked was a small batch of my mother's famous shortbreads, as thank-you gifts for the Linotype operator who helped me set and print the Remembrance Cards for my mother, a week and a half ago, at the Printing Museum, and for a neighbor who (rather fortuitously) happened to be a trained caregiver, who helped my dad and me take care of my mother, the final few weeks. Nothing fancy, just the usual integral signs. Managed to get 63 cookies out of a single-recipe batch of dough.

Coping with the loss surprisingly well. Didn't cope so well with a pre-concert dinner experience, Thursday evening, that was bad enough to where it interfered with my enjoyment of an evening of McGegan conducting Mozart at the Bowl. Perhaps my mother's protracted demise has affected my patience.

AGoodness Cat... What a week! Thoughts and prayers with all of you.

I've had a couple of weeks off, house hunting etc so glad not to have cake pressures to add to it.

It's my friends baby shower today, and I am gifting her this cake:

AMatty--amazing cakes! I live the birdcage one the most.

All I adore the Thomas cake--I know that my two year son will be wanting one next year.

I had a lion cake for a preschool end of year party and a small birthday cake with the request of bright blue accents.

AMBalaska if your ever down towards Houston we can always have a party and if it is in July we probably already have one planned.

Moms2twogrlz I love Thomas the train. I may have to talk my niece in making one next year for her son.

Anaelisabethlee I love the diaper bag and I might try one one of these days and hope it comes out looking half as good as yours.

Bunny whatever Hootabella is she is adorable.

Cakeccd I love that blue on chocolate. But the lion is my favorite. And your doing great after 3 years. I am always learning and know I may never be as talented as some but I do my best and that is all that counts. Besides I make for family and they always love them.

Happy baking!

Cat

I'm so sorry this happened to your nephew, Sending prayers to you and your family. Watching a child suffer through a seizure is one of the worst experiences of my life.  My grand daughter suffered a birth injury, she was without oxygen for over three minutes last year. After this tumultuous year, they diagnosed her with Cerebral Palsy.

It took a long time to even think about cakes again. I would pop on here every once in a while and read through your Friday night thread to look at the cakes different members had worked on all week. It gave me back my passion for cake decorating and I made a ladybug (her nick name) cake using Liz's MMF last May for her birthday.  I was not my finest work (still learning how to cover a cake neatly), I didn't want to post a pic of it because it was so personal and we didn't think she would make it to see her first birthday.

I just wanted to personally thank you for this thread and your continued dedications to it even through your own personal life's ups and downs. You and this thread are truly appreciated more than you know.

God Bless And Keep You And Yours

Hi everyone!

Well, it's been some kinda 3 days in our family. Our little nephew was unresponsive for 19 hours. He had 22 seizures in 24 hours and two of those were grand mal seizures. Very very scary! We had a house full of people here but all is well again. He was released today after having a full day without any seizures and reacting well to the anti-seizure meds. Such a scary time for all of us but we are breathing easier tonight!

Thank you all for your well wishes and your understanding! Your messages of care really have touched my heart. It's always wonderful to know that there are those pulling for you and sending out thoughts and prayers. I've had a few private messages as well to say how much this board has helped them through some trying times and I have to say that it really makes me feel like I'm doing some small bit of good just showing up here every Friday night and enjoying all of your work!

And speaking of that work!!! What fun cakes this week! I'm hoping for a much more quiet week in our own household so I can make that cake for my Mom that I was supposed to make this week and then I can share it with all of you on Friday! Until then I'll keep checking back in to see how things are going!

So sorry to hear about your nephew's illness, Cat; will be praying for his health & for your family's comfort. I have to agree with MBalaska....baking is a great salve; glad to know it's helping during your loss, James.

I'll answer the question posed to last week's similar cake first lol... no Jack in the cake! carrot cake, cream cheese filling, buttercream iced with fondant label & lid.  Ben's 40th birthday party was at a local restaurant/ tavern; apparently the waitresses loved the cake too.

Ben's turning 40!! Carrot cake, cream cheese filling, buttercream icing, fondant label & lid.

Birthday cake for a friend's mother.  Her favorite colors are blue & yellow, & she loved the Teddy Grahams on my recent pool party cake so she wanted a cascade of dressed up bears.

6" & 3" cakes, chocolate with buttercream icing, fondant ruffles & royal icing decorated Teddy Graham bear cascade. Recipient's favorite colors are blue & yellow.

AI usually use this site as a resource for cake education, but tonight as I was fighting sleep and thinking about the cakes due this week, so I decided to surf around in different forums. Low and behold I stumbled upon Friday Night Cake Club. I LOVE this concept. A someone who is completely self taught I welcome any constructive criticism! This was my only cake for the week, a Mickey Mouse first birthday cake. The bottom tier was chocolate cake with Oreo cream filling, second tier was white cake with coconut cream filling, third tier was strawberry cake with strawberry cream filling and the top tier was the remaining strawberry cake batter baked into a Pyrex bowl. Shew, what a cake!

Mattyeatscake, your vow renewal cake is a gorgeous! I an partial to birds and bird cages so the idea is right up my alley. LOVE! :) Great job, everyone!
