Any hints on wiring very welcome Chelle. I really struggle with it and the tape ends up much thicker than I would like.
I use a quarter width tape unless I want the stem to be thicker . I use stemtex not parafilm. I start down the stem a bit then push it to the base of what I am taping. I stretch it quite tight as a tape down. I can show you next August if that is as clear as mud.
AHi everyone,
I'm new to the forum and pastry decorating. But anyway, after reading random post on here over the past couple of months, I decided to join...so here I am! This is a cake that I recently did for my newphew's first b-day. This was the very first cake I've decorated of this nature. You'll see from my pics that I had issues with the fondant (this was my second attempt at laying fondant on a cake, I had so many issues but since then I figured out my mistakes). Any advice would be much appreciated, I'm totally okay with constitutive criticism.

Mimi, is stemtex and parfilm brand names? I've always used what was in Michael's or a local cake supplier here in town. Have ordered some online, but don't know the name brands of those either. I try to pull it as hard as I can without breaking it to get it to wrap around the wire, but sometimes it comes unwound. And some of the pre-wrapped wires, when trying to put on a calex (spelled wrong, I'm sure!), for example, it will take the tape up the wire with it, causing a bigger hole in the calex and having problems getting the tape back down on the wire. I love the look of the wired flowers, but I sure have a heck of a time doing it....even after watching a Nicholas Lodge tutorial on wired flowers!
Ideally put on the calyx before the florist tape, that's what I do, and wind the quarter tape a little below this so that you can slide it up in position when the tape grips. Don't use very long tape and pull it taut as you work..it sticks to itself.
AI finished a fondant covered, fresh strawberry filled cake Saturday morning at 1 am! I left it out with my ac running at 61 all day but last night (Saturday at 10pm) I decided to put it in the fridge. We plan to eat it today around 3. Is it still good to eat since it had fresh strawberries? Should I take it out of the fridge now? Someone please help I'm new to this :// I posted here because for some reason my post isn't being posted thank you hope someone can help

Stemtex is the paper type tape that sticks to itself as you stretch it. Parafilm is the plastic type tape , I think florists use this. I don't like it but I do have some friends that use it . When I am stretching the tape on I kind of use my thumb and forefinger to stretch and smooth at the same time.
If the tape is unravelling it may not be on tight enough. the stemtex needs to be stretched to activate the sticky quality in it.
Ok, the stemtex is the kind I use and I do stretch it, but sometimes it doesn't stick tight. And sometimes I stretch it too much and it tears! It's hard to get the exact amount of stretch in there at times so that's why I keep practicing. I've never used nor seen the plastic tape. Thanks for the info.
Cakebaby, I do it that way, too, when I'm wrapping my own wires, but I'm talking about ones that were purchased already wrapped. I think I got them at either Michael's or Hobby Lobby, but the floral tape was already wrapped around the wires, and it came unwound as I was trying to put a calyx on. Now I try to make sure it's a "naked" wire and wrap it myself. Again, it's practice, practice, practice!
AI can't wire flowers for the life of me either. Every time I try they end up falling off. I haven't done many cakes with flowers, but the ones that I have I've been able to get away with doing them without the wire and gluing them on with royal icing. I'm going to have to learn to wire, though!
I simply adore the vintage hat box cake! How did you get it so perfect?
I ended up doing two other cakes for fun today. Every week at my son's school, parents take turns baking for the teachers each week. This week is my turn - so I made two eight inch cakes, both inspired by cakes I've seen on (Kate Plumcake and Laura Loukaides.

I love that first cake! So beautiful! That's my style of cake...... Did you paint those flowers on? And the second one made me hungry for cherry pie! Great job on both!
Thank you! I didn't do nearly as good of a job as Kate Plumcake did, but it was fun. Yes, it is hand painted. I've never really painted anything until I discovered vodka and food pastes, now it's my favourite method of decorating!
I also love the painted cake.
I use stemtex. I cannot get parafilm to work at all for the life of me. Maybe I will try cutting the stemtex finer and trying to work with it. Practice, practice practice. I usually manage to drop everything when I work with less than half a width but it looks like I will just have to persevere until I get it. Thanks for the suggestions.
AMy own first thought when I saw the thistle-looking cake was edible printing.
And how in the world did you do the cherry pie cake?
AThis will be my first time posting on CC. I'm just starting off. I work in a grocery store bakery so I'm fairly decent decorating with butter cream (at a fast pace I might add). I'm trying to work with new techniques at home so this first cake will be my first ever carved cake. It took me weeks to get all the flowers done by hand. Of course what can you expect when you have two kids. I'd like more practice with fondant bit am satisfied with the outcome especially the flowers. This next cake is a tie dye cheesecake with a red velvet crust along with red velvet cupcakes and cream cheese icing. I made these for my mother's birthday this weekend which everyone loved. It was so much fun making them.
Everyone on here is so talented! Any advice would be appreciated. Keep up the good work!
AHi Jesi, welcome to CC!! Your flowers are beautiful, oriental lilies are my favourite :)
luvmykids2bits - I love the cherry pie cake!!! I was looking at Laura's cakes today, I love her work. How did you get the cherries so shiny??
A[@]nanasmom[/@] beautiful cake, I'm looking at this on my iPhone, so I can't tell if the green is airbrushed or a color or luster dust?
A[@]catlharper[/@] is the letter A on your cake edible, if yes, is it chocolate? That's how it looks on my phone. Either way I like it!

Here's one from last week.
AHmm. What a coincidence, "reenrules": my next birthday cake is going to have a playing card theme. Since I'm turning 52, what could be more natural than . . . "52 pick-up"!
Of course, your Las Vegas cake is far more ambitious than my own plans: just some edible printing on a 9x13 sheet cake. If we were both entered into a cake decorating competition, I'd bet on yours to beat mine.
Hi! What a surprise to see a twin cake of my thistle cake and my name quoted, thank you so much! Happy caking and happy painting;-)
AI Am Very NEW To CC and I am self taught. I have had no classes as of yet. And all of your cakes are Awesome I can't wait to get there some day. My cakes don't even compare but here are a couple of mine

Startingout, for being self taught, you did an absolutely beautiful job on those cakes, especially the middle one. That is very detailed and well done. All of them are well done!
Quote:
You're right. Yours don't compare to mine, but not the way I'm assuming you mean: the LEAST ambitious of the three you showed is FAR BEYOND anything I've ever even ATTEMPTED, much less ACHIEVED!
False modesty doesn't become you.
(About to run up to a cake supply in Orange, to pick up the edible print for my own birthday cake, a cake that, like my birthday cake from last year, I wouldn't even contemplate without edible printing.)
AYou're doing an excellent job to be self taught! If you decide to take classes you'll really be pumping out some awesome designs!!!
And that is one of the beauties of Friday Night Club. It has nothing to do with comparing, but is all about sharing, regardless of what level people are at or whether they are professionals or amateurs.
