It just dried out. I always coat my fondant or gumpaste with crisco before double wrapping it in plastic wrap to keep it from drying out. You might be able to save it, zap it in the microwave for 5-10 seconds, and knead some crisco into it. If there are big, hard chunks, break those off and throw them away before you start to knead.

You can put the hard pieces in little water and nuke in microwave and make edible glue. hth

AI was really surprised to discover that not all plastic wrap is created equally. I usually use Glad wrap, but a few weeks ago I guess I was having a cheap moment and bought the store brand stuff. It is terrible. I coloured my fondant the day before putting it on the cake, wrapped it up tight like I always do and the next morning when I went to use it it was dry and crusty like it had been wrapped in paper instead of plastic! So, make sure you are using good plastic wrap! :)

You said you made your MMF, did you stop the micro to stir them?  I know you can get some hard pieces from it "burning" in the micro.  It won't look like it and you'll usually notice after it's rested.  Just a thought.

Love the glue idea though.  Genius.

Yeah great ideas! I would knead in some shortening and if heat it in the microwave for 10 sec. until it softens. I posted a new thread recently on homemade MMF recipe I have never had dry out even with gumpaste. Here is a link to the recipe. Good Luck!

It does sound salvageable. I would do as others suggest and discard the large dried bits; knead in some shortening; and then soften everything in the microwave at 10s intervals.  I always grease my ball of fondant in a bit of shortening; wrap it in cling wrap; seal in a ziplock baggie; then store it inside tupperware.  It seems like overkill but it keeps it soft and ready to use without tons of kneading.  Gumpaste is made to dry completely so it needs protection even more so.  That being said it does require a bit more elbow grease to soften before using.  Definitely keep some quality plastic wrap/baggies on hand for baking jobs.  I do buy the store-brand kind but only use it for less important needs because it is very cheap and thin – moisture goes out and surrounding air (with their scents/flavors) go in.  I always use the “good stuff” for baking projects especially when wrapping cakes to freeze.

Good luck!
