Stencil Fondant Before Or After Attaching To Cake?

Hi all,

This isn't so much of a "how do.." but rather than "when do i.."..

SO I am planning to make a 3-layer 8 inch round cake covered in pink fondant, and then have a green fondant border going around it, on which will be stenciled lustre dust.

When should I attach the border to the cake? Before stenciling the lustre dust onto it? Or first lay the border down on the counter, stencil the dust onto it and then lightly spray water onto the fondant and try to attach to the border after?

My only concern is that if I stencil first, and then go to attach the border, I will smudge the border accidentally with my fingers.

BUT if I put the fondant on first, and then go to stencil, I may not get as great a coverage since it will not be flat and I may have trouble stenciling the dust at an angle.

Any suggestions?

Thanks!

I would say attach it first then stencil or you run the risk of distorting your stenciled fondant in addition to smudging it.

Thanks for your suggestion. I think that may be the better option too.
