Earlier this year I got a bit carried away whilst playing with bickies and experimenting with new techniques.  At the end of the weekend I had 3 dozen bickies and only hubby and I to eat them. 'Not gunna happen'.  I was feeling a bit tired of giving so much away to hubby's workmates and so put the thinking cap on.  I wanted to cheer someone's day up and finally decided that maybe I could give them to the local old folks home.  Good in theory.  Sorry, they refused to accept them.  If I had a relative there it would have been perfectly O.K. but as a stranger it was totally unacceptable.  Well hello.  Did they think I was going to try and poison someone.  If they were having a fete they would have quite happily taken them to sell even though they didn't know me.  The cancer unit at the private hospital was a no go as well but surprise, surprise, the staff throughout the hospital were quite happy to eat them and did.  I must say that I was disappointed that as a society we have reached such a point where you cannot do a good turn without it being suspect.  I accept that some of the oldies would not have been able to partake because of diet but a lot of them are in the home because they need assisted living.

An example of some of the bickies.

AIn the US there are food safety laws that state food for sale must be from a licensed and inspected facility, so they could get into trouble if they took food from an unknown source and tried to sell it. The US also has health care privacy laws that prohibit providers from sharing details (such as restricted diets due to various conditions) without consent, Australia probably has similar versions of these laws.

Potential liability also likely plays a role in these decisions, both on your part and the providers'. It's best to contact the recipient first before donating.

I was telling the story to the ladies in my Knitting group and one of the ladies works with mentally handicapped adults who are able to work.  They make face washers and things like that.  She said next time that they would gratefully accept anything that I made.  She said that she could imagine the smiles and excitement that it would bring so I have decided that that is the way to go next time.

Jason, in Australia, for events like fete's to raise money for non profit organisations anyone can donate.  You do have to list what ingredients were used and they note who supplied them in paperwork.  Also I was not asking to be told of anyone's diet restrictions.  I was just going to donate the bickies with a list of the ingredients and let the staff decide if people could have them or not.
