I was asked to make a 10' round cake, purple with pink hearts.. I found this picture online and would like to do something similar with the fondant strips up the side and then the spiral fondant... Can anyone give me any pointers how on how to get my fondant spiral like that? And how do I attach them all together without and frosting showing???

Thanks for any help!

I use fondant mixed with tylose powder so it will dry hard(er). I wrap a dowel or pencil with plastic wrap or waxed paper and grease it lightly. I cut the fondant into strips and wrap diagonally around the dowel/pencil. I let them set a day or two on the dowels, then slide them off the dowel and let them continue to dry. To attach them, you can stick them to a piece of fondant that you have set on the fondant ribbon. You can make "glue" by thinning some of the colored fondant with some water. Some of the pieces on top can just be placed without gluing. They should sit within the other curlicues.

Will this work if I don't have tylose powder??? All I have is the MMF I am going to make. I don't live anywhere near any big stores or anything to pick up any and the cake is for Tuesday...

You can use a 50/50 mix of fondant and gumpaste. You can find Wilton ready-made gumpaste at most Walmart or Michael's stores. MMF by itself is too soft. It will not harden.

Depending on the climate, I think you should be fine with just Fondant alone. I would roll out the strips as thin as possible to promote drying.

I have often used fondant w/o adding anything extra. They will be a bit softer; break a bit easier so make plenty extras.
You will also have to roll the fondant a bit th icker.
