Cup Measurements For A English Baker

there is a recipe that I would like to try and have American cups the only bit I'm confused with is 1/4 cup of butter to I just fill my quarter cup with butter??? Do I push it down??? Or is there a weight I should use
Sorry for the stupid question just don't want to get it wrong
