there are many great decorators and bakeries in Chicagoland. Check with some of them, as they may offer classes on the side. Also, Wilton offers classes, and that would be a good starting point for some of the basics. On the north side is the Cordon Bleu culinary school, and in Elgin there is a community college that offers a pastry degree program. Aside from all of that, there is a ton of tutorials here on CC and elsewhere on the internet.
Good luck, and hello neighbor!

Except for the 2 colleges, the other info would still be pertinent in Milwaukee. Look for a Michaels or Hobby Lobby for the Wilton courses. Call local cake shops to see if they offer any classes.

You may also want to find out if your kitchen can be licensed. It will be hard to start a home-based cake business, if you cannot get a license.

There are many relatively inexpensive classes, many great books. Wilton is a very good place to start.
