. . . . doesn't like buttercream AND that's cool with me. He's having a birthday on Friday & I'd like to surprise him with "something" else. BUT WHAT???

So would ANYONE like to throw (please not very hard icon_smile.gif ) me some ideas. I mean I'm at a loss. I don't even care if I can decorate with it, he's more about taste. I once made him a strawberries & cream cake. Pink & all.

Thanks!!!!

Hi Daltonam.
Maybe youcould do for him like I did for my son's birthday. I made him his favorite Death by chocolate cake with mocha bettercreme. I turned it into a "Film Reel" (in my photos) and added pictures printed on icing paper from when he was born until today. Making the cake all abouthim and how he is the "Star". It wasn't difficult to make and it really did give him a sense of being extra special on his special day.
For the top and bottom of the film reel I baked a chocolate chip cookie instead of using cardboard.

HTH

Just made a small wedding cake for a extremely picky groom that didn't like buttercream at all.... not even the way it look icon_sad.gif

Bride and I brainstormed: chocolate ganache, poured fondant, bettercream, meringue, cream cheese, cokked flour icing.... finally stand for Italian Meringue Buttercream thinking that was the best for the type of decoration whe chose and he could simply just put it aside.... HE LOVED IT!!!

Belive he was judging only by his experience with American Buttercream: basically shortening + confectioner's sugar and when he tasted this silky delicacy learned that not all buttercreams are the same icon_biggrin.gif

Maybe you can try...

Coconut cream cake filled with coconut cream pie filling and frosted with meringue and a sprinkle of coconut, you can brown the meringue in the oven but it works best if you have a little torch, not an ounce of buttercream in site.

What are his favorite flavors, though?

Banana cake with praline filling and white chocolate ganache

Orange Grand-Marnier cake with a frosting made with white chocolate, orange zest, Grand Marnier and heavy cream

Brown sugar cake with coconut buttercream (oops, I said the bad word!)

Vanilla buttermilk cake with fudge frosting

Boston cream pie

Sour cream-chocolate cake with peanut butter frosting and chocolate-peanut butter glaze

Dulce de leche cake

Black forest cake

I just made myself hungry for cake and it's not 3pm yet!

Sorry I'm just now reading, I was having problems getting on CC.

jobueno -- Hubby told me IF I decorate a cake to do a guitar. BUT I love your idea & your cake too. I'm thinking that would be PERFECT for his graduation cake (thankfully still got a few yrs before that)

cakeville82-- icon_redface.gif I don't even remember if he eats coconut icon_surprised.gif

what_a_cake -- I made SMBC last month & didn't like it at all, I know they are made differently (SMBC & IMBC) but how is the taste different? I loved the fact that the eggs were cooked b/c I hate eggs so to me that's a huge plus. (I made Brown Sugar SMBC) I'd love to find a recipe that works for me.

He doesn't have what I'd call a favorite flavor & I'm trying to think about what he'd order if we went somewhere. I know that in ice creams he likes cookie dough & cookies & cream.

I was already making a banana cake sometime b/c I have a recipe I've been wanting to try & the bananas, so that's a thought.

SMBC and IMBC are the same thing. You just get to them by a different procedure. It's my favorite thing in the world (I dislike all the other buttercreams, especially the ones with shortening).

Lots of people who don't like buttercream and try any of those two, convert instantly. But I know that to other people it tastes too much like butter. I happen to think it tastes as whatever you flavor it with.

Well how about an Icecream cake? I made one for my granddaughter a couple years ago and it was really good. I used whipped cream frosting.

daltonam,my son dosen't like buttercream either.i also try the smbc, but he said it just tasted like butter.so i bought some "whip & ice" from a cake supply store.it come's frozen, you just thaw it out and whip it up,it tastes like a lightly sweetened whipped cream. it come's in vanilla and chocolate. you can add flavorings if you want. now that's his favorite instead of buttercream.
