A friend of my mom's called me about a cake... unfortunately I was immediately put off because she said "I need you to make..." instead of "Can you make..." and never even asked if I was free those dates or anything. Just assumed that I'm sitting here waiting for the chance to make her a cake. But anyway, she is having a small family gathering to celebrate a wedding that will be out of the country. So she wants a small wedding cake.
"Okay, how many people will be there?"
"Oh Lord, I don't know"
"Well, how many servings of cake would you like?"
"I don't know, just make it birthday cake size, but with a small one on top that they can save"
"We need to know how many people you're feeding to determine the size"
"Can't you just make it like a birthday cake size? How big is wedding cake size, anyway?"
***at this point I was literally speechless for a moment***
"Wedding cake sizes vary. Cake is measured by the slice. I can make the size suit however many people you're serving. Typical "birthday cake" like in Walmart would be 8" which would serve about 14 people. Is that enough?"
"Oh no. Well, I don't know."
This went on a for a while before I got her to commit to a number of servings. SIGH! I never realized that there was "birthday cake size" and "wedding cake size". Silly me.
In the words of a great cake decorator... "NEXT!" 
Birthday cake size lol, why can't she just call the people and ask how many people they are expecting.
Cuppy to save? For what? Their one year? That cuppy won't be a cuppy by that time! Interesting how cake muggles think they can just say, "I need a wedding cake" and expect us to know exactly what they mean.
I'd get that a lot at the grocery store bakery I used to work at and I'd always think, "sorry, left my crystal ball at home".
I thought they cancelled Crank Yankers?

Sorry to revive a dead topic, but I had to update you guys on this cake. I did it today, and the lady who ordered it (who knows me and knows where I live) was working, so she sent her mom & sister to pick it up. Shortly before pickup time, I noticed a car parked in front of my house. Before I could go outside, they pulled off. A few minutes later, they came back and knocked on the door. Turns out these people parked in front of my house, saw the blinds open on the windows and two cars parked in the driveway and determined that I was not home. Went to my neighbors house looking for me (they were no help, they know me as "Shellie", not as "lady who makes cakes") and left. Never came to the door or anything. Bizarre. They called the lady who ordered it, said I wasn't home, so she called my mom looking for me. My mom freaked out because she KNEW I was home and figured something terrible had happened if we'd all left. All this drama for one little cake.
Sounds like your mom should rethink her friendship with this woman! lol
She and her 'kin' sound like their more trouble than they're worth.
I can't even bring myself to discuss the price. 
Told my mom yesterday, she might be a really nice lady, but she's a real PITA when it comes to cakes. With the exception of this debacle, every time I make her a cake, she calls about 4 hours early "Is my cake done? I'm in your neighborhood, can I come get it now?" Plus I absolutely despise the design ideas she insists upon. She let me design this one, thank the sweet Lord. I can't figure out for the life of my why I wasn't 'totally booked' the last time she called. Bet I will be the next time!

I just can't get enough of this experience...they asked me when they finally managed to knock on the door and I showed them the cake...'Now, can we eat this whole thing?' Bwahahahaha, I don't know, how hungry are you? It's not as if there was any decoration that wasn't clearly frosting, and I can't imagine in my wildest dreams that these folks have ever heard of a cake dummy. No, you can eat the top two tiers, but I want the bottom one back, because it looked really tasty. 
If the cake you made for this lady is the one with the yellow rose's on top (and a first wedding cake) you really did an awesome job! It's a really beautiful birthday size wedding cake. lol. cb
Yes, that's the one, thank you for the compliment! I only hope I can do as well when the time comes for me to make a wedding size wedding cake! Or a wedding size birthday cake, for that matter...
lovely cake, I just hope she doesn't try to cut it while it is still assembled.
