Just found out that the travel mayhem last night was caused by a jacknifed lorry which police said was "driver error",  The driver was uninjured.....well I want to injure him I can tell you :x

I loved your decoupage cake Lizzy.  I loved them all actually.  Re the other cake lady - I "get" the stuck in a timewarp thing.  Until I came on here I had no idea that trends had moved on so quickly.  I never ever knew that you could get sharp edges with fondant or that ganache is the "glue" of choice.  If she doesn't watch it, she'll get stuck in the past and have to wait until the fashions change back again.  I'm still waiting for totally royal iced cakes with stringwork to return!  Lol - not really - stringwork is a pita.

Hi all. I'm taking a break from cake work to have lunch, as the dreaded bit is coming up- covering the blasted cake in SP.

Nanny I'm glad Richard's come home. Must be so difficult for you all x I have a friend whose depression is on and off. It's 'off' at the moment, been for a year or two now although she is on medication. She used to ring me crying, she'd just be washing the dishes then break down and cry. I felt so helpless.

Lizzy, I'm glad your cakes got the attention they deserved!

Right, no more avoiding the issue, got to cover this cake. I'm hoping the size (it's pretty small) will help. Dr Oetker SP please do your magic today.

Ciao for now cake folks x wish me luck!

Morning

Nanny I'm so glad to hear your son came home safe that must be a little bit less worry for you, Is there no chance of him going to an support group with other ex army  who are going through the same thing. Hope Sarah is feeling better today and that your cough doesn't turn into what others on here have had. BIG HUGS x

That lady wanting the cake expected a lot for 35/40 why do people not realise how much work goes into them.

Lizzy I'm guessing your rude customer got her £30 cake and it didn't live up to her expectations so decided to come back to you. Maybe she thinks as she didn't go with you last time you will be after her custom and give her a reduced price.

Loubee I used the cupcake mould as a guide to roughly cut the bottom and middle layer then trimmed them to fit as I didn't have any small boards to use, then I cut around a 6" board for the top layer and trimmed it to fit as I wanted ganache around the sides of the sponges.

Lelly I love your cupcake it is so cute.

kathy what a bad journey home bet it felt like you were stuck in your car forever.

Chezza don't think I'll be trying that it doesn't sound very nice.

Petitecat hope covering the cake goes well, looking forward to see it.

Sorry to anyone I missed.

ARoxy I have no idea, it's a flaming double decker bus, and 2 people and a print out of Cliff Richards summer holiday on the bus, then 6 decorated cupcakes, she can bugger off!

Ok enough of my dramas, gotta crack on with life.

I just made a lemon cake for work as I promised them, I decided to make it in one tin, it's ok ish, not as light as my normal, but it's only for work.

Sunday I have a choc Nutella cake for the bride I did the Xmas wedding cake for, it's his birthday and they didn't get any at the wedding, it isn't a special birthday or anything and she just wanted something simple, do you think stars, on a blue cake will be ok? Any suggestions?

Nanny is the cake for a bloke? How about small stars all around the bottom half or 1/3rd of the cake rather than all over? What about stripes- very neutral and they're very popular right now.

Well hubby's great idea for my armature didn't really work. His idea was to drill a hole in the cake drum just slightly smaller than the diameter of my dowels. Trouble is with all the movement caused by me icing the cake and placing the sugarpaste, plus the weight of it all is making the dowels sink. I've  had to use no nails glue to glue the dowels to the board in the hopes that will stop it sinking. Next time I'll make the armature. I'd planned on threaded metal pipes, nuts and bolts and all that but he was convinced this would work, grrr

Crikey Jean - what are you making?  I must have missed that.  Sounds like an episode of DIY SOS!  I'm fascinated now!

Barbara - I like Jean's suggestion.   What about a plaque with his name on?

Thank goodness he's come back Nanny! You must be very relieved.

That's a baaaaddddd journey Kathy :(

Your brioche cake is so cute lelly, I've not seen one done like that before! I think that's a really cool twist on the cupcake cakes, and I agree that the idea of cutting a sheet cake is a blinding one - was that you Jean? That would work so much better than getting a dry edge and uncooked middle!

Lol Nanny, did you say yes straight away to that for £35? :D

What got me with that customer was the speed of the messages. She was obviously outraged at the audacity of someone charging for their time, so managed 3 before I'd replied once! I did wonder if the last one was ****e which is why she's asked again!

Jean, I think the pinwheel and the decoupage cake got more attention than anything, including the chandelier. The pinwheel edged it though, I think as it is a bit different. The decoupage one is also a bit quirky, but has the lace in too which as the wedding dress lady you saw said, is big atm.

There was another cake lady there. Not a particularly nice woman by all accounts but flawless execution on the cakes, significantly better than mine. Her table was set up better, and honestly the finish on her cakes was as I say significantly better, but the cakes to me looked like they had been taken from the pages of an early 90's wedding magazine. There was one which was lovely, with drapes and diamantes, but the tiers were quite squat and very very rounded which dated it, and the rest were just meh designs. I had a lot of people come down after having seen her who were really enthusiastic about seeing something different and unusual despite the fact hers were technically much better, so if you're doing a fair I'd definitely go a little bit off the wall!

I'm interested to hear what that cake is like too chezza - is it a bit stodgy at the bottom?

You summed it up perfectly about the problems baking a giant cupcake Lizzy. It's a pain sometimes.

Thanks for the explanation Roxy I am definitely going to give this a go next time. I had so much messing about with the last giant cupcake I made with it being undercooked and dried. The top part cooks fine but it's the bottom that is a pain. I think your method would solve the undercooked problem. Can I ask what size sheet cake did you bake?

Nanny I'm glad Richards home safe. It must be hard not only for him but everyone else around him.

I cannot believe the cheek of the women asking for the cake and cupcakes, she seriously does not have a clue what's involved in the making of these obviously.

Kathy what a nightmare drive home. Hope you get home quicker tonight.

Jean that sounds like some cake, looking forward to seeing it.

Loubee, it's looking pretty good at the moment. I'm really happy after the initial struggle with the dowels, then the almighty fight to get the SP on. After trying it the normal way, I took the SP off and panelled. The legs are awful at the back, so no one better look there!

Sorry Loubee it doesn't have a size on it I just used a big roasting tray that Angel bought me from asda to thank me for all her xmas presents bless her. It barely fitted in my oven though so guessing close to 13" x 9" .I just used my soft chocolate sponge recipe which is normally to soft for covering with Sp but as I was ganaching and using a chocolate shell and it was a small cake it worked fine. I think maybe next time I might just bake a 4", 5" and 6" round layers in my round tins as the sheet cake wasn't as deep in the corners as the rest so I couldn't use near the edges, plus with round layers it would mean less mess and no cutting.

Petitecat glad you sorted the problems with your armature, is this the marshmallow man cake? Looking forward to seeing it.

Roxy, yes its marshmallow man for a ghostbusters mad little boy. The cupcakes were a doddle compared to the main cake! I'm contemplating whether to airbrush some shadows onto it, but I don't feel my airbrush skills are quite that level yet!

Lovely finished cake maisie, it looks really nest and very clean. I also love the round cake on the square board it makes it look very modern, I'll have to remember that.

Can't remember what else I've missed other than a rude customer (lizzy was that you? I can't believe how some people are!) and someone who got stuck in a terrible traffic jam. 5 hours! Oh. Em. Gee.

I'm off to bed now. Just got back from the pub quiz and we won whoop! Makes me feel very excited which is sad I know. I love me a good quiz.

I have some advice to ask about fish and chip cupcakes but I'll have to leave it until tomorrow as I can't find the blooming picture again now.

AThanks everybody. :-) It didn't look much different to the photos I posted when I was asking which flower to use but tbh I forgot I'd posted them! (I was very tired!). Sugarluva I liked the round cake on the square board too, I was pleasantly surprised cos I didn't think I would- thanks Kathy. Sorry nanny, I used a bit of Renshaws green (the darkest of the two the Ystrad shop sells) and about three times as much white. I chose green cos I had some left from my last cake but I didn't mind what colour it was really. My inspiration was your Sarah's cake, I really love that cake. So it could've been peach, dusky pink, pale blue, any colour that looked vintagy. I was pleased with how it turned out (apart from the state of the SP!), it's probably the cake that most resembled what I had in my head when it was finished.

Fish and chip cakes Sunday interesting, can't wait to see that!

How's the marshmallow man coming along Jean?

And the bike Kathy?

How's Sarah today nanny? And Richard?
