AJean, I don't have a problem with the Tesco SP normally but I use my mat for rolling out and lifting. As I don't sell my cakes it works out a bit cheaper but if I was selling I would use SK or Covapaste.

Maisie sorry you are not well - just rotten luck when you have so much to do. Glad top tier has worked out for you. Wish we were a bit closer as could have taken on some of the "grunt" work to help you out.

Roxy - ouch that will hurt. I allegedly came a cropper whilst dancing on Christmas Eve after too much Champagne. Don't remember much about it at the time but wondered why I had a massive bruise on Christmas Day. Rudolph must have kicked me while I was sleeping.!! Time I grew up!

ACatsmum beautiful cake. I think I need to invest in some cake lace soon it always looks so beautuiful and elegant on cakes.

Maisie poor you, sounds like you've got a bit of everything at the moment. Glad the cakes going well so far, I've no doubt the rest of it will go well too.

Roxy ouch that sounds painful. Hope you don't bruise too badly. My knee is still sore and bruised from two weeks ago.

Catsmum sorry to laugh but your story made me smile. Sounds like a good night when you end up bruised from dancing and can't remember anything. Lol.

Whats wrong Chezza still not fully recovered from your op?

I have just fell in the garden coming back in from putting the recycling out and managed to land half on the brick step across the metal door jam and half on the tiled floor. Don't ask me how I managed to do that but I'm very sore now and have already started to bruise.

Hope your ok and you make a speedy recovery

Thanks Loubee and Chezza I am in quite a bit of pain to be honest. Gonna take some pain killers and try and have an early night. I was awake until after 3am with an upset stomach, that's probably why I have fell in the first place tiredness.

Chezza I hope it is just temporary and your back to normal very soon it sounds very uncomfortable.

I am baking a cake for my Nana she is 81 on 2nd jan, I'm not in the mood today to be honest. I am just going to do something small and simple. I have baked the cakes, would have liked them to be a bit deeper but they will have to do I'm not rebaking. Will crumbcoat and cover tomorrow and hopefully decorate as we are out at my mum's for dinner on new years day so don't want to have to do it then.

Awwww, bless you chezza, not having much luck are you?

It may just be a case of having to build it up especially as your internalstatus aren't used to the fat it's getting now, I have a word with Sarah, see what she says, aren't you under a dietitian?

ALovely cake nanny, really impeccable SP as always!

Hope you're doing OK with your cakes maisie. We're all virtually cheering you on!

Chezza I got the Mary Berry baking book for Xmas too but I've not even had time to look through them yet. Got a couple of others too I can't even remember who they are by now!

I've been attempting a minion cake today with my cake frame. Thought I would just give it a go. Not 100% happy with the cake but we'll see what it looks like tomorrow when I finish all of the details! How hard is it cover a birdcage shaped cage?! Bloody impossible! Even with panelling it looked a right mess.

The cake frame seems OK. Would never have attempted this cake without it, and it's a fairly basic design, but it is a little more wobbly than I expected. Could just be my assembly though...

AThanks chezza, nearly hope you feel better soon.

Thanks Nicola, it really isn't that smooth, I kneaded it for ages, dunno if it was the cold weather, just didn't feel soft at all.

Yes, I hated the bird cages, hated them with a passion.

AWow Lelly -clever girl. Never tried wafer paper - too scared so well done.

Barbara, immaculate as always. Just love the colour.

Hope you are feeling better tomorrow Chezza and you are going through an adjustment period.

Maisie, we are all behind you. Hard enough doing a wedding cake without all the other stuff you are dealing with. Dying to see the result- but remember once it is there forget about it and enjoy the wedding. TBH I was surprised at how minor a part the cake plays in a wedding these days. It always used to be part of the speeches so more of a focal point. The first dance seems to have more importance now, which is sad considering how much effort and worry we put into it.

Roxy, hope you feel a little less sore tomorrow. Ice and Arnica will help bring out the bruising. Mine was self inflicted, allegedly but, I can't sit down to the Temptations, "Ain't too Proud to Beg". That was my downfall - ahem- literally.

Signing off for tonight Shamefaced 58 yr old.

Lovely cake Lelly you did a fab job for you first time using wafer paper, did you do the boarder with a paper punch?

Nanny lovely flawless cake as always.

Thanks for the birthday wishes for my nan Chezza, she probably won't even realise it's her birthday to be honest but I still like to make her a cake to try and celebrate it with her.

Sugarluva looking forward to seeing your minion cake, I haven't even had tine to unpack my cake frame yet but have loads of ideas for using it. I agree covering a birdcage shape is hard. I panelled my birdcage cake which I found easier than when I did the minion cake which I covered in one.

Thankyou all for the cheering on and thank you all for all your help, don't think I'd have attempted it without you. X

It's done but I haven't got a photo on my phone, it was dead last night and it's all in boxes ready to go now. I will get one tho. I'm really pleased with it, it's not perfect but I'm happy.

Lively cake nanny bit I knew it would be.

Lively wafer flower cake Kelly.

Gota go, see you later, byee.

Ps, sorry Kathy, forgot to say, hope everything's ok with hubby's appointment. C

How's your eye now? Have a lovely time at the wedding.

Poor you Lynne, that sounds like a cracking fall. Try and stay the right way up tonight, ok? :-D

Beautiful cakes nanny and lelly, really lovely.

Has your hubby had his appt yet Kathy? Hope all is well if he has x

I'm doing a cake for my friend today as a last minute thing for her birthday but I'm a bit stuck for ideas. I've got some deep purple sp and I'm thinking swags and diamonds, but I'm blank on what to do on top that won't take ages. Maybe have a go at a wafer paper dahlia?

Right, off to get started. Probably :-D

Maisie, oh no I hope your conjunctivitis clears up real soon!

Thanks for all the tips re the tesco SP. Kathy, I'll try rolling it on icing sugar. At the very least, I'd like to be able to cover cake dummies in cheap SP. How was your hubby's appointment?

Roxy, how are you today?

Catsmum, haha the stories we could tell if only we could remember them ;D Do you have the mat by sweetwise? I'm currently researching which mats are best for rolling fondant.

Lelly, lovely cake, so pretty!

Nanny, beautiful cake, as elegant as Sarah's. Did you colour the SP yourself? I love the colour.

Sugarluva, good luck with the minion. Covering cakes is hard enough, without having to deal with a tall cake!

My mum and kiddie party went really well. We met at the soft play first and the kids had a run around for an hour and a half. Then we all set off for my house for food and some games. They all had a good time but something was wrong with the cake I served. It tasted off to me and I think the culprit was the milk, which didn't taste quite off, but not quite right either. It's good till Jan 30 so I'm not sure what went wrong there as it hasn't been open very long. I've thrown away the milk now and hopefully I haven't made anyone ill with the cake. Lesson learned- always taste the milk first before using!

My vanilla sponge has just come out of the oven. Smells lovely and looks quite flat yay. Hopefully I can fill and cover today ready to be SP'd and decorated tomorrow.

AYes Jean, I try mostly to colour it myself, I had some navy Sp there already from the star wars cake I made some mths ago and some green too, I just add a bit at a time it ill I get what i'm after.

I love soft play places, been to a few with Ioan, mind you I can't stand up straight the day after as I always end up in there with him, and always got bruises.

Can I ask what you use the milk for jean?

FFS! If I've given up my New Year's Eve afternoon to accommodate you for a wedding consult because you're both off work this week, the least you could do is turn up. Or, if you're running late (currently 45 minutes late, as the appt was a 2.30pm) you could at least call!

I even phoned them yesterday to confirm the appt was still ok for today.

I called at 3pm and the number (a mobile) just rang and rang until it cut off....  so it was obvious then that they weren't coming.

It's so rude!  All they had to do was call or email.

Not a happy bunny right now.

Oh well....

HAPPY NEW YEAR, EVERYONE.  Wishing you all a happy, healthy and prosperous 2015.

Thanks for all the friendship and support on this page.

Lots of love

AHi everyone - lovely cakes Lelly and Barbara. Tried to post earlier today but the predictive text on my new phone is doing my head in!!! :-x If I try to write SP it comes out "so" and Lelly...."let". I have to get one of the young'uns to have a look.

Thanks for thinking of my hubby - well, what a disaster that was! About half an hour before we left home (so 8.30pm) he read the papers that came with the appointment. One of the questions asked if he had ever had metal fragments in his eye and were they removed by a doctor or not. If not, then there was going to be a risk. So after many words we went to the hospital. Well it was like a ghost town - I didn't think it was even open! We get to Radiography and have to ring a number to let them know he was there. Anyway - after much debate explaining that he used to regularly get bits of metal in his eyes about 40 years ago when he worked in a British Leyland garage - the radiographer didn't want to take the risk. Apparently the strong magnets could cause blindness if there was the tiniest bit left behind! He now has to wait for another appointment but this time we know it can't be at night again because he will have to have an eye x-ray first to eliminate any problems. What a nightmare. I couldn't believe he didn't read the form until last night! Grrr.

Aah Lynne - apparently after last year's Christmas dinner and dance I went "swimming" in my hall........only thing bruised however was/is my ego as it now regularly comes up in conversation. (Damn Prosecco.....)!

Yes Jean - why do you use milk in cake? It's just that I never do but wondering if I'm missing out!

Oh Suzanne - the traffic is mental around here today. Maybe they are just late.

Happy New Year Cake Mates! Hope 2015 gives you everything you are hoping for :D

I couldn't wish for a better bunch of women, and men all 2 of them, whatever they are up to at the moment.

Have a fab night for those who are staying up to raise a glass or 2 or 3 for the new year.xxxxx
