CHEAP, CHEAP, CHEAP:::Sam's is up the road

I had a lady contact me a few weeks back regarding a shower cake for a friend's upcoming baby shower. NO problem. She wanted a certain theme, so I pulled some ideas in the way of photos, as well as, gave her some thoughts of my own for the cake to make it totally unique and personal. So, she decides on a 1/2 sheet cake instead of the tiered cake option. No problem. I quoted her the price ($45 + tax). I didn't hear back, and followed up with her last night via e-mail. I woke up this morning to an e-mail that was full of icon_mad.gif evil! I won't quote her verbatim, but the jist was that...oh, yes, her "qualms" with me WERE numbered...

(1) My prices were absolutely outrageous.

(2) How much can a cake cost to bake and slap icing on?

(3) Why in the world would someone "splurge" on a sheet cake for $45 when they could go to Sam's and get one for half that?

(4) I ought to be ashamed of my prices. They're sinful.

OMG!!!! I did something that I normally don't do...I e-mailed her back with my own answers to her above questions...in BOLD, RED type. I haven't heard back from her the second time, and don't expect to, but I'm absolutely tired of the whole "highway robbery" comment. I'm VERY reasonable for my area, and have a great customer base, who doesn't mind paying my fees. Furthermore, do you go into a store, and HAGGLE them to give you a lesser price? NO. You pay what the price sticker says...no questions. I run a legal business from my home, and should be treated with the same respect as any other business.

Whew! I feel so much better getting that off of my chest! Anyone else having this situation come up more and more lately?

I think this is crazy. If she can get a non-personal cake at sams, so be it. I would tell her where the bleep to go. Good luck and keep your head up, dont worry about it. People are ignorant.

See the problem with people is they dont get that its not homemade at sams or any other store they are getting cake from cake mix. Thats what the price difference is and all that stuff is loaded with preservatives where as homemade is what your paying for. I have a customer that always gives me a hard time because she says it doesnt taste like you get at the store, for example I made a home made apple pie with real apples and she said it didnt taste good cuz it didnt taste like the grocery store makes I laughed so hard I mean, it was home made crust. It tasted great but she said it doesnt have that oooy gooy stuff hahahaha ok well you go a head and pay for your preservatives Im gonna keep on keepin on.

"Ohhhhhhh! You wanted a cake with icing just SLAPPED on there! My fault! I misunderstood! I thought you wanted a nicely decorated cake for your very special event. I didn't know you wanted one with icing just SLAPPED on there! If that's what you need, then my price is $18.95.

But trust me ..... it will look just like you want it to .... a cheap cake with icing just SLAPPED on there.

You can pick it up at 3:00."

Why in the world do people call a CUSTOM cake place, work out a CUSTOM design, and then expect it to be CHEAPER than a cake factory like Sam's or any other grocery store???

I picked up a $5 package of mini cuppies at the grocery store a couple of weeks ago (the huge dollop of icing on each one just looked so good!). When I got home I noticed that the expiration date on the package was March 31. A whole month! What do that put in those things that they are good for an entire month???

Well, I then tried the cupcakes and I swear I could taste the preservatives. I don't even know what a preservative tastes like, but I know that is what it was!!! icon_smile.gif My son and husband wouldn't even eat them. I threw out 11 cupcakes.

People have no idea what real food should taste like anymore with all of the prepared junk that we eat. Having a custom cake with a fresh taste beats the heck out of that crap from the grocery store/warehouse bakery!

Me:

" So instead of wasting cyberspace emailing me, why don't you take your anger management issues to Sam's. They'd be happy to entertain your insanity there."

OH!!

"Sinful is trying to get a custom made cake for less than the price of the cake board it's sitting on...we call that "stealing" so what you should do is find a quiet corner and have a little talk with Jesus...it's called repenting."

I'm the SAME WAY! I used to love grocery store cake and I used to eat DH chocolate icng straight from the can. I can't even think about eating that garbage now that I know what real cake & icing tastes like.
I'm so addicted to cake my family threatened to check me into the Betty Crocker Clinic.

Unfortunately you are so right. there are so mahy people that eat the ready made soup, the frozen dinners, or go the fast food route that they dont have a clue what real homemade food tastes like anymore. Some even prefer the processed junk! I have a friend that swears by Stouffer's lasagna, they eat it like once a week at her house. (I think its nasty).

When she got pregnant I made her a homemade lasagna and froze it for when she had the baby. It wasnt anything horribly special, just my normal lasagna and they are still raving about it months later.

People eat too much processed foods and foods full of perservatives. It is nothing for me to make an extra lasagna when I am already making one and then freeze it for another time. It doesnt take much extra time to make your own food from home. It costs way less and its soo much better for you. Even desserts and cookie dough gets made in 2 batches and then wrapped and frozen for another time when I dont HAVE the time to whip up a batch of cookies or a homemade meal.

Off the box now and back to the real problem...

I think you were right to email her back like that. I would have just told her that she was not only paying for a slab of cake with some icing slapped on it, but she was paying for real premium ingredients, your design, and your 2-6 hours of time. Its her loss, but I wish people would stop and think about the taste difference between the 2 cakes.

Heck yah! I'm a freakin' lady! LOL!

I find it hard to understand why people prefer to pay 3 bucks(if you're lucky) for a loaf of bread that has a shelf life of an decade when you can make your own bread for 82 cent a loaf.
I had a bunch of my DH's soldiers and their families over for Thanksgiving abd I made some dinner rolls. At the end of the night I saw two of them arguing (really arguing) about how many the other one was taking to go. They're like, "Where'd you buy these?" when I told them I made them they were sitting there like I told them I was Moses. "Really? I didn't think homemade bread tasted good" I just shook my head...how sad.
