Hi! I've gotten myself into a bind, and I'm hoping maybe someone in the Columbus, OH area can help me out. I have a wedding next weekend (9/13), and the bride(zilla) has decided at the last minute that she wants square tiers instead of round tiers. It's a 4-tier cake, so I need to make the bottom tier 16". I thought I had 16" square pans, but I've looked everywhere and can't find them. The biggest pans I have are 14" squares. I looked into buying some online, but in order to get them in time, I have to pay express shipping, which ranges from $40-$60 (plus regular shipping costs!)!!!! I really hate to pay that, so I'm hoping I won't have to do that. If anyone in the Columbus, OH area has one or two 16" square pans that I can borrow this weekend or early next week, I will be so grateful. I am more than willing to pay you to let me use them, and I will come pick them up and bring them back to your house. If anyone can help me out, please PM me or respond here ASAP. Have you tried calling a local bakery in your area. They sometimes rent out their pans.

I am sorry I can't be of more help but I must wonder why this is your problem? She ordered a round cake.....you purchased the supplies, boards, etc. for a round cake. If she wants to change it to a square cake at the last minute, she should be footing the bill. Last minute changes aren't cool.

I'm sorry if I come off as being negative - I simply detest people switching things around at the last minute and causing YOU to run around - it doesn't seem fair.

I'm with Cake Diva. My contract says that any changes must occur before the 2 week window.

Any last minute changes that cause an increase in cost are borne by the client.

Not that my opinion helps much, but I hate that you are having to run around like a crazy person now.

I totally agree ... unfortunately, I don't have that detail in my contract (but you can bet I'll be adding it after this fiasco!). This bride has been a nightmare. I met with her back in March, and she just decided her flavors LAST WEEK!! I kept emailing her all summer to try to get her to decide. I've been bending over backwards for her, and I'm kicking myself for doing that now. She doesn't even seem appreciative for me being so accommodating. It's my own fault, since I should have been more firm that she had already ordered the round cake. She *claimed* yesterday that she told me from the very beginning that she wanted square cakes (the picture of the cake she wanted shows a square cake), but I specifically had "round cakes" written on the order form. I also specified round cakes in the contract that I emailed her last weekend, and she just yesterday (almost a week later) let me know about the squares. Anyway ... there is not much I can do at this point but make the square cake. I'll just be happy when the wedding is over. Thanks for sharing your frustration with me ... I'm feeling it, too.

Was the bottom tier of the round going to be 16"? You get more servings from a squares than rounds, so maybe you don't need a 16" square. Of course, you may have already taken that into consideration!

If worse comes to worse, you can bake four 8" squares and put them all together to create a 16" square (oh.....for a two-tier, I guess you'd be baking eight 8" squares, which is a lot of time/work.... maybe this isn't a great idea after all )

Hi, not sure if you're able or willing to drive to Hamilton OH, but there's a huge cake supply store there that you can find online (can't type the name here for some reason.) I don't know what's in Columbus but there's a good one in Dayton, one in Cincinnati, and one in Newport, KY. PM me and I can send you more detailed information. The drive to Hamilton sucks but they'll have everything you need.

Thanks to everyone for all of your great help and suggestions. I ended up letting the bride know this afternoon that I was not able to do the square tiers because it was too late at this point to order the pans that I needed. It didn't seem worth all of the stress and extra trouble I would have had to go through (and have already gone through ... I think I'm getting an ulcer! ), and she's the one who just made the last minute change. She emailed me and said that round tiers are fine, so at least that part of this stressful cake is no longer an issue. Thanks again!

I see that you all ready told the bride no. But in case you need it for future reference. I know that Cake Craft carries Fat Daddio and I think I've seen some Magic Line there as well. I got my 16 in Fat Daddio there.

Thanks so much for letting me know! I was going to call Cake Craft today, and then I realized that I don't think the 16" pans would fit in my oven! The 16" rounds barely do!

Just so you know cake craft did have the pan you needed. I was there to day to pick up some alpine shortening and did a quick look. there it was a 16" as well as the decending sizes. I picked up a 10 and 4 in square while there. they are only open till 5 on Sat.

Maybe she would consider a round base with squares on top?
