OK, don't laugh!!! I read in a thread a couple of days ago where someone was asking how much BC to put under fondant. Someone replied that you want to put enough on so when they peel the fondant off there will be enough icing for the cake. I just can't see eating the stuff and thought "why would people want a cake with it, except for wedding cakes to look so perfect".......... icon_smile.gif

Depends on your fondant. The last wedding cake I covered I used McCall's fondant (from Toronto) and it was so good with the buttercream underneath that I saw lots of people eating it. I think we are just conditioned to think it will be gross. icon_smile.gif

You can also flavour it with vanilla or almond extract or any flavour really.

do you think MMF is the best tasting?

I do think it's because it looks perfect. I like the way it looks but the taste.... icon_razz.gif Now in my defense I have never had homemade fondant and I think some of the ladies on here have recipes that get really good reviews so you might want to try them thumbs_up.gif

The fondant I had was while I was in class and it was the Wilton brand. This is the way I look at it.....If I was stranded on a deserted island and had nothing to eat but Wilton Fondant...I would eat it BUT....I'd have to make it into the shape of a pineapple and use my imagination icon_rolleyes.gif

MMF is a bit sweet for my tastes but maybe that's just me. I find regular buttercream on the sweet side as well. My family and I were just discussing this yesterday. I think we taste it too often and we are a little sick of it. icon_lol.gif

I love it. Just about everyone I know likes MMF. It is sweet but I think the sweeter the better. icon_biggrin.gif In fact, I just used it on a wedding cake and just about everyone ate it except my bf. He thinks it tastes like rubber. Wilton is nasty. Don't eat it. Just use it to play with. I've never tried it but have heard raving reviews about Satin Ice.

If you've never made fondant before, I'd definitely try MMF (alternate recipe) which can be found on here. It's super good and I've never had problems with it.

Satin ice is very good, but a little chewy if you put it on too thick. I love Masse, as it isn't chewy, but it is SO expensive!

if you aren't doing a large amount of cakes and have the time, make your own. It is much better then anything else out there. I think MMF is deliciousious on kids cakes and they love it!!

Everyone in my house loves MMF so much that I save a baggie-full (have to limit the amount that I keep around cuz I could eat it till I was sick.) of the scraps from my cakes just so everyone can nibble on it later.(Although it doesnt stick around long).
It kind of reminds me of the stuff called "circus peanuts " that we used to get as kids.Anyone remember those?

I use Pettinice and just about everyone eats it. Esp if it is a warm day - it stays soft and even melts a bit, I have also flavored it a bit.

Don't judge fondant by Wilton - they shouldn't even be allowed to call it fondant - Gross icon_razz.gif

IMHO if a substance is covering a (hopefully) yummy cake, it's intended to be eaten. I would be moritifed if someone peeled off my hard work and threw it away uneaten.

My first fondant experience was some pre-made stuff bought by the pound in Manchester, England. Dunno what brand it was, but it wasn't bad. I don't do much with fondant, mostly modelling, so I tend to make my own from scratch when I need it. Makes the whole house smell good while it's cooking!

I've acquired various samples over the years, never enough to do much with but with a dash of extract the crummy ones improved a bit. Now marzipan, on the other hand, I will eat right from the lump, never mind coating a cake with it! icon_biggrin.gif

You folks rave over MMF but my experience with marshmallows has always been of the stale cardboardy variety, so anything involving marshmallows is not appealing to me. thumbsdown.gif

As far as eating it goes, I don't care for MMF at all. It seems so "chewy" to me. I made Toba Garrett's fondant that is posted in the recipes section here and it tastes SO GOOD! It sort of just melts in your mouth. I think I may not have mixed in enough sugar, though, because it was much harder to work with than the MMF. I'm definitely going to try again, though.

I made a cake this weekend with wilton fondant...my whole family thinks it tastes terrible. But my daughter loves playing with it and helping get the colors mixed in it. I've made a small batch at home(for a different cake) using the wilton recipe in an old book of my mom's and I thought it tasted good. my mom always told me she hated it and she never used it to decorate her cakes. I only use the prepacked wilton kind when I don't have enough time to make my own(which was the case the weekend). Good thing there was only a few stripes and polka dots on it.

LOL I was just telling my daughter tonight that I bet if we flavored Toba's fondant with peppermint and dipped it in dark chocolate it would taste just like a peppermint patty! I may do this for Christmas.

I just placed my first order from intotheoven.com this evening - they're really competitively priced (several items were min $3 cheaper than other online retailers) and their shipping charges are the lowest I've seen as well!!!!

Let's just hope their order fulfillment isn't anything like the delivery of food I received the other day for dinner - missing a least one item from each entree - I'm sorry, but what is a Vietnamese Noodle Bowl without the fish sauce????

Melysa,
I just went in to the oven web side and love it. I'm plaicing my order right now. Thank you
I always make MMF and I think it taste very good, I can eat some of it depending on the icing on the botton but it is a little too sweet for me, I'm ordering satin ice to try it, I hope I like it.

I had only tasted Wilton fondant until a few weeks ago which I find absolutely inedible. Yuck! I ordered Satin Ice and Bakel's pettinice to compare them. The pettinice, in my opinion, is only slightly better tasting than Wilton. The Satin Ice, on the other hand, is wonderful. I put it on a white cake with raspberry filling, iced with a thin layer of buttercream first. Wow, the flavors went together really well. After the cake sat for a day, the Satin Ice was soft and not that chewy anymore and the flavor was great without any added flavorings. You can smell it as soon as you open the bucket. My family really liked it. I would like to make and try MMF and hope to in the near future. I read a thread a few days (or weeks) ago on here where someone said that Satin Ice tasted better than MMF and was less sweet. I recommend you try them all and see what you like the best.

I am glad this came up, I ususally make MMF, but in a pinch I would love to have a bucket of Satin Ice on hand or at least the red and black small buckets....will they last if I don't get in them but a few times a month to make little details out of it?

On the other hand MMF is a good base to show customers that fondant isn't all that bad. I always take some to tastings to show them that it isn't as bad as they think. And I do declare my dears this is such a small town, but I do believe I am getting the word out icon_biggrin.gif

i feel the EXACT same way!

wgoat5, YES, the satin ice will stay fresh for 6-12 mths as long as its stored in a cool dry place well wrapped..it comes in plastic, inside a bucket, just rewrap tightly! having the dark colors for accents is a excellent idea. a time saver, and you also dont have to worry about a change in texture or taste from adding all the color yourself.

wendy1273, you'll love it!

moptop, thumbs_up.gif yes, its nice knowing they are fast and reliable.

Ok, I've only tasted Wilton and yes, it's gross. (I only use it for accents and tell people to pick it off) lol... However, my 3 year old comes into the kitchen begging me for it like it's candy, the WILTON fondant! So, maybe kids don't care either way (I make mostly kids cakes).

I'm about to try my first batch of MMF next week for a rubber duck cake. I need cheaper bubbles! icon_biggrin.gif

I made my first MMF cake this weekend, and the kids...yeah there's none left, to say the least. My 3 yr old and my 7 yr old won't even touch the WILTON brand.... not even using your imagination can make that flavor taste good.....blech!!!!! thumbsdown.gif

My first Fondant cake I made was using the WILTON prepackaged stuff for a Dr. Suess celebration cake, I have it on here...but I feel sorry for whoever bought it at auction once we one the competition and hoped they didn't pay too much for it.... I felt bad because I knew it would not taste good.

Nothing leaves my kitchen from that point on, unless I will eat it. thumbs_up.gif
