Thanks for your help everyone. You gave me some good ideas! I had a lot more succes with this car than my last one. It still took FOREVER to make. I decorate at night b/c of my three kids, so I spent one night making gumpaste parts, one night getting the cake on the board and carved, and then I was up till 4 a.m. decorating the cake the next night! Oh, and I wasn't even done at 4 a.m.....I still had things to finish the next morning.
I ended up just stacking up the cakes and carving till I got the right shape. I covered the whole thing in fondant....added the candy clay tires. The mirrors, bumpers, and hubcaps are all gumpaste and fondant. I used my clay extruder for the trim. (LOVE the extruder!) The "grass" is just royal icing with some BC tip#233 grass. The grass was an afterthout the next morning. I just felt like the board needed something on it.
I hope I don't have to do another car cake for a while. They are too much work!!! LOL

I love the VW! Is it worth it now that it is done? That is usually what happens to me - I hate it when I'm having problems but love it when it's done and looks good! I have a VW on my list of cakes to make. I also checked out all of your other cakes - I love sclupted cakes and yours are great. That is what I am striving to be good at because they are so different from what anyone in my area is doing. You are indeed an artist.

Yes, it's definitely worth it. I wanted to see if I could do a better job than my last car. Next time I'll charge more $$ though! I like to be different too. I don't think anyone in my area does sculpted cakes either...
