Okay so I'm trying to get some biz so I made up a dozen decorated flower NFSC cookies and wrapped them in cookie bags. Made up a flier advertising cookie bouquets and folded up the flier and taped it to the bottom of each wrapped cookie. I took it to my Bunco night and handed out the cookies to each lady and said I was "shamelessly promoting my side business." Everyone liked the idea and the cookies and I left with one paid order and lots of "I'll call you"'s. Okay, so I blew it and said I'd give the Bunco ladies a special price of $20.00 per bouquet. I know, stupid huh? Well, I was trying to get this thing going. So the lady who orders one asks me if I'll deliver and I said "Sure!" (dumb). Turns out she wanted it delivered to another city and I had to take it in rush hour traffic cuz that was the only time this woman was gonna be home. So the delivery takes me almost an hour and a half. I'm mad at this "friend" of mine who actually asks me to deliver this $20. bouquet that far, but I'm mostly kicking myself for agreeing to it. Okay, well, lesson learned. No more deliveries for free. And another lesson learned was - I have to charge more for the bouquets because $20. was no where near worth my time.
So then the same lady calls me back and wants another bouquet. Leaves a msg on my ans machine. Her son is in the hospital and she wants me to deliver it to the hospital. I call her back, all set to tell her my price has gone up to $30. and I'll take it to her house only (she lives really close). When she answers she's at the hospital and pretty distraught. Her son is in ICU, motorcycle accident, doing okay. I didn't think the timing was appropriate to give her a price increase so I didn't say anything. I did tell her I'd take the bouquet to her house and she said fine. So I make the bouquet and call her today when it's ready to make sure she's gonna be home. She says she is going to take a short nap but her daughter will answer the door - but she doesn't have any cash so can she pay me later. (AAHH!) I'm not happy but I agree.
I get to her house and go in the gate and up to the front door. Knock knock. No answer. Door bell. No answer. Then her 4 BIG DOGS come walking up to me and I'm thinking "UH OH" but they all seem pretty friendly. Well after knocking several times and ringing the bell and no answer, I started to leave. I got to the gate and when I tried to open it to leave, the DOGS FREAK OUT AND START GROWLING AND BARKING AT ME AND ONE NIPS MY LEG!! Now I'm ready to drop the bouquet and run but no way am I gonna make it out of the gate before the dogs get me, so I stand still and speak quietly to them. They calm down. I try the gate again...bark growl. Okay, nice doggies. Pleeez don't bite me. So I'm standing there clutching this bouquet and shaking. Finally after about 5 minutes some lady walks her dog down the street and these 4 dogs get all excited barking at the other dog and 3 of them follow it along the fence line and away from me. Still one dog there though. Nice doggie. Try the latch, growl. It wanders a little ways away from me and I make a break for it. I get through the gate and pull it shut but it won't latch. Dog lunges at the gate barking and the other 3 come running. 4 dogs lunging at the gate and barking and I can't get the gate to latch! I'm holding it closed with my foot, clutching bouquet, and trying to latch the gate and not lose a hand. Finally get it latched.
Then daughter finally comes out of the house and I tell her that I have this bouquet for her mom. I told her that her dogs got me cornered and one nipped at me and I'm very upset! She apologizes and I left in a huff. The Bunco woman who ordered it never even called to apologize or anything! Witch! She totally took advantage of me on the first bouquet by asking me to deliver it so far, and then doesn't pay me for the second bouquet and doesn't lock up her killer dogs when she knows I'm coming to deliver it to her!! If she calls me for another bouquet, my price is $120.!!!

If she calls again, I would tell her SHE, personally, needs to meet you! And I would find a nice, diplomatic way of telling her that you have realized you were not making ANY money at the previous prices so, therefore, the price has doubled! So, if she accepts that new said price, graciously ask her if she will be paying with cash or check when she PERSONALLY meets you to pick up the cookies. Then, she will know that she has to pay you upon delivery. No question about it!!!

Geez! I just don't understand why people aren't ready to pay us when we deliver.

I, personally, have had this happen at a wedding, a birthday party and a baby shower. When you go to pick up your car from being serviced, don't you expect to pay for it then? Why shouldn't they be prepared to pay us when we deliver??

OMG! The cookies are GORGEOUS! Knowing what it takes to create something like this, I can understand how you must feel. The people who order these things just have NO IDEA what is involved in making such Incredible Edibles!

You are a true artist...you need to be treated and paid like one!

Go get 'um girl!!!

I know! I don't know what's wrong with people. I would never say "can I pay you later?" nor would I ask someone to deliver something that far when I know I got a bargain basement price on it! And the whole dog thing, UMFF! Rude!

I know her son is in the hospital but she said he is doing fine and they're moving him to a regular room and he's being a smart a$$ with the doctor. Plus, she is having an open house at her house tomorrow for her home-based business so it's not like she's so distraught she can't deal with this cookie bouquet business.

Oh, I'm so sorry this happened to you! Yes, you definately need to raise your prices because your cookie bouquet is just darling.

I have 2 huge 110 lb German Shepherds and I have to tell you, if those dogs of hers were not put away or tied up when she was expecting you, she never had any intention of letting you onto her property. I ALWAYS put my dogs up if I know somebody is coming, leave them loose to keep others away. So maybe that was her way of telling you she didn't really want the cookies. I hope you get your money & I would tell her she owes you more for the nip the dog gave you or you'll call Animal Control! I've been told by law enforcement & animal control if I invite somebody to come to my house & my dogs bite them, I am at fault & can be sued since I invited them over even though they were on MY property.

Those cookies are wonderful! AND 9! Worth WAY more than $20 bucks!

OMG! I can't believe that. If that had happened to me, I would've been furious! You're really brave for holding onto that bouquet w/4 giant dogs trying eat you. thumbs_up.gif I would've dropped it (or thrown it LOL!).

That's so true CakesUnleashed! I hate it when they try to jip me and get some cookies for free. Nope, uh uh, not happening buddy! They either pay me right there or they're not getting a bouquet.

Let us know, cakegurl, if she gets back to you about the cookies.

It's Fri. Nov 10th and I had Bunco again last night. This woman finally paid me, after all this time!
I walked in the door and she grabs a $20. bill from her wallet and hands it to me. I yanked it out of her hand, gave her the stink-eye and walked away without saying a word. I barely spoke to her all night, and I could tell she was nervous around me. I don't care. That's just rude. And still never a word like "sorry my dogs almost bit you and it took me almost a month to pay you when I live right around the corner!" Some people are so self-involved.

What an awful experience. The one thing I would have considered.... someone in ICU can't eat cookies. She should have waited until he could eat.

Um ...Her dog BIT you? should've taken a photo of the dog bite and taken her to damm court!

She INVITED you over and left her ATTACK dogs lose? It may have been an oversight on her daughter's part..but to leave you out there with the dogs?

What were you doing? Giving the little brat a FREE SHOW?

Don't tell me she didn't hear the doorbell..Little witch!

You can use this to tell people that if they have dogs out when you deliver that you will not enter the property and if they don't meet you at the gate, you will leave!! WITH THE COOKIES! make them come to you!

CakeGurl, I think you should have RisqueBusiness make up one of her naughty butt cookies (see her wonderful website) and have her write, "Kiss my Sweet A$$" on it and give it to her at the next party. icon_smile.gif

You're cookies are absolutely gorgeous and I'm sorry you had to go through such an ordeal to get $20, but my God, does anyone else feel like they just read the script for a sitcom? icon_lol.gif It's amazing, seriously Hollywood can't BUY that kind of story. Better luck next time right?

"Stink-Eye" How funny! I have never heard that expression...I too know how you feel about not getting paid. Currently involved in my own collection squabbles with a customer. Thank goodness the majority of my customers are willing to pay for quality and custom work...you do however come across the occasional "boob" who thinks you are the mud on the bottom of their shoe. I think a nice little wording of "Payment Due Upon Delivery" is in order!!! You don't pay, I put the goodies back in the truck! And yes, I'll spray your dogs if I have to!!! icon_mad.gif

Next time this clueless woman asks you for a cookie bouquet (which sounds as if it may be a LONG time, thanx to your "stink-eye" icon_wink.gif ), you can tell her your price is $45, they must be paid IN CASH AT THE TIME OF PICK UP. That's right, I said PICK UP. You're an artist, not a delivery service. If she raises a fuss, you can just say that you thought she'd realize that when you brought them to Bunco, and you directly said you were "shamelessly promoting my side business", that any REASONABLE ( icon_rolleyes.gif ) person would realize that the price quoted on that flyer was a ONE-TIME ONLY PRICE.

Your bouquet was lovely, and if she had ANY grace (which I seriously doubt), she would send you a lovely card with more money in it for your troubles, or a live floral bouquet with a nice thank-you note attached.

Since she's a clod, I think the STINK-EYE was definitely in order.

You sound like a class act. And class shouldn't have to put up with CRASS.

icon_razz.gif

Hold your head up high. You're okay in my book!
