Ok...I have never used fondant before in my life, nor have I ever eaten a cake with fondant icon_redface.gif (((I know....sheltered, aren't I?)))). I did purchase the pre-made Wilton fondand and I made a batch of the MMF (IMHO>>>MMF IS BETTER!). So far I have just played with the fondant...tried a few roses, tried to make some animals, etc. icon_rolleyes.gif

My question to all of you wonderful CCers is...when you cover an entire cake with fondant, is it customary to peel the fondant off before you eat the cake or eat it fondant and all?

It's OK to laugh while you respond!!! Thanks! icon_lol.gif

It depends on a couple of things. Often the cake is taken and cut in the kitchen. In that case, the caterers often remove the fondant to make cutting easier. However, I have seen some brought out with the fondant still on.

I have served several of the cakes I decorated, and served the fondant with the cake. Since it was home-made fondant, it also got eaten with the cake.

Those who don't want the extra sugar, will leave the fondant on the plate.

I think most cake is served with the fondant on because peeling it off is a big mess. Then it is up to the guest if they want to eat it.

I agree I believe its up to the guest to eat. Fondant is pretty but doesn't really taste all that great. Have a great tasting buttercream underneath and all should be fine.

From what I've seen, most people find the texture more disagreeable than the flavor, but some people love that sugar. I don't think the kitchen should peel the fondant off - I put a pretty thin layer of icing on fondant cakes, so it would be pretty ugly served that way. I say leave it pretty, and leave the choice in the hands of the guest.

I agree, it would be really ugly if you peeled it off. Plus a lot of people do eat it.

Thank you all for your input! I have been afraid to ask that question because it just sounds so silly! (I know...I know...there's no such thing as a dumb question!!) icon_lol.gif

I'll try one this weekend...maybe this time I'll get pictures before it gets eaten by the cake trolls that live under my kitchen table!!

Yep, what everybody said is pretty much what I think also, leave it up to the guest. And IMHO I would NEVER eat Wilton's fondant but I wouldn't peel it either. And MMF, my son would eat every single piece of it, my husband not so much, again, is a sweetness thing, not becuase it tastes bad. HTH.
