I have a customer wanting to know what I would charge for 1/2 sheet cake or 2-tier cake to feed 40-50. It will be a Finding Nemo themed cake. Do you guys charge per serving for a special occasion cake?? What would you charge for this?

I was following the Wilton chart and it says 60 servings for a 11x15 sheet cake. This is for a 2 layer though. Do would it only make 30 then for a single layer??

Thanks so much!!!

Yes to the 60 and 30 questions and yes to always, always, always price by serving. My basic serving (all bc) is $2.60, except that I charge extra for square cakes because I hate them so much.

Just a gentel reminder that Finding Nemo is a Disney copywrite. They are very peticular about people selling any cake with their images on it. You can do an orange fish cake but you want to be carefull about selling any thing that resembles too closely.

Thanks for the replies. Yes I know about the copywriting thing. I am not going to do anything Fishing Nemo themed other than the under the water theme. I might buy something to put on top to bypass the copyright issue.

So what does everyone else charge per serving??

Why in my local store they sell cakes with figurines on it, is the same.... when I do a cake I only use plastic figurines that I found at Michaels, Walmart...

I start at $2.00 for BC tiered cakes, then add for fondant accents, fondant bows, etc.
Fondant covered cakes (I haven't had an order for one yet) I am going to start at $3.00- which is probably too cheap but, hey, I'm just getting started....

11x15 one layer start at $30.00, then add for fondant accents, figures, etc. and I figure 35 slices from this size.

MCook, you charge less than $1 per serving for your sheets???? icon_confused.gif

11x15 serves 35 of the 2x2 pieces x my sheet cake per serving price of $1.50 = $53, plus any fondant, FBCT work, special decors, etc.

I know, I know--that's cheap, but I don't think I could get your prices right now from around here. The graduation cakes I did for $40.00 as was the bathtub baby shower cake. I have just been REALY working at doing this as a business since March so my "client base" is practically nonexistant and word-of-mouth is slow!
$30 is twice what a Wal-Mart cake is......... : (

MCook, I am with you.....my price is the same. The people around here wouldn't pay 2.5-3 for a basic price...

Wow, Stephanie,--Plano is a "high end" city. I would have thought your prices could be more. Even though Waco is over 100,000 pop. it's still a "country" city and only weddings or VERY special occasion cakes bring the big bucks. I would sure like to tap into the big money, but for now my clients are like me, just regular people, middle class with kids in school or college and still on budgets.

I actually based my prices off all the threads I read here on CC. I printed off dozens of pages of prices, did a spread sheet and came up with what I thought would work for me. Hopefully one day I will be able to up prices as my skills get better and I can offer more options/variety. I do have a wedding cake in October that is to look like a stack of books, and another one for January 2008, so things are picking up somewhat--just hope it continues! thumbs_up.gif

wow i think i beat you guys...i live in the rio grande valley and everyone here thinks they are like family so they shouldn't be charged anything over $20-30, for any type of cake. luckily the customer base that i have coming constantly are willing to pay justly for my hard work. as per serving i do try to keep it around $2.50.

just out of curiosity how much do any of you charge for cupcakes; jumbo, regular, and mini sized ones. i had a customer this week order 5 dz mini's so i'm just curious what you would price as.

have a good weekend!

sisita,

I agree. I'm at about $1-$1.25 a slice as well. I know I'm pretty cheap but for my customer base/market that's about average. This is the first year that I've really started to try to push my business and it's going okay.

We actually have a lot of bakeries in the area, so my competition isn't really Walmart.

Oh, but as to the original question, I really don't charge differently. I try to stick around $1.25 a slice (unless of course it's a good friend and I give them a discount.)
