Hi everybody... I need your help again! I was wondering if you could help me figure out a price for this cake, it is 12"x12"x4" tall, it is butter-vanilla flavor with all fondant docorations and the rubber ducky is all buttercream. I made this cake for a friend's baby 1st birthday and a lady attending the party asked me to make her a cake just like it. But I don't know how much to charge, I haven't been selling cakes lately so I have no clue! I figured I spent around $20 (my cost) in this cake and that it would serve around 50 people. Please... need your help! I'm in the Virginia Beach area and there is not many custom cake shops around me or that I know of... so please, any advice and HELP!! icon_biggrin.gificon_biggrin.gificon_biggrin.gif
TIA!!

Don't know how much would you charge per piece for a fondant covered cake, plus the duck on top.It might depend on your location .Personally, the price per serving would be $2.50. Multiply that for 50. If you find it too much , lower the price to $2.00 per piece.
The choice is yours.

Do you really think I could charge $100 - $125 for a cake like this? Do you think it is good enough to charge that much? I would love it if I can get that much but sometimes I doubt myself and my work by asking myself if it looks good enough to ask $100 for it. It really tastes good, people often make comments on how good it tastes, so I'm pretty confident taste wise, I'm just not sure enough "looks wise". I really need some honest opinions on the way it looks and the finished product. Do you see any imperfections? Thanks again to everybody!

Hi YummyFireMummy, Thanks so much for the heads up on my cake! You sure made my night! Now keep your fingers crossed that I can keep it up and be able to ask for that much money. Scares me to death to think how people is going to react and might call me CRAAAZY! I guess I have to value my work a little more, ha!
Thanks again!

I would not be able to get $100 for a cake like that in my area. BUT I would have no problem charging $60-75. The two prices are fairly close-go with what you are comfortable with and the area will support. You likely can go higher as you do not have another bakery in the area offering such a cake. It is just wonderful, I honestly do not see any imperfections! You are so talented thumbs_up.gif

I would definatly only charge 50-60. That is a 30 to 40 dollar profit. Your work is really good.

It is worth a lot more but around here I'd be lucky to get $60. We never get what they are worth, by the time you figure in our time and effort, but in rural areas, you just can't get a lot for a cake.
The cake is very cute!!

Yep that is a really cute cake and lots of work in it. I would think 60 at least but if your area can get 100 the I say go for it.

I live in the DC area . . . you could easily get 100-125 here (if you were a licensed business). I don't know about down in Virginia Beach, but I'd assume 60-75 easily. Even the smaller shops would charge that, and I wouldn't charge less than 60 or 65.

I think it is probably worth $100. But if I were to make the same thing, I would probably have trouble asking for that much (but I havent sold very many, so I would probably practically give it away until I get more confidence) If I were actually doing it, I'd probably ask for $75.

Hi, nefgaby! I am in Richmond and would probably charge $70-$75 for it. Check my pictures for the onesie and booties cake. I made that over the weekend and sold it for $45. It fed 25-30, so I think you should be able to get at least $70 for it. Good job by the way! thumbs_up.gif

I belive I read on this site the following formula for pricing. Cost + 3x cost =price. Which would be $20.00+ $60.00= $80.00

I completly understand about not being sure what to charge for cakes I to doubt my work I know its good and everyone is always wowed but I cant in all honestly charge 60 dollars for say a 1/4 sheet cake especially for a childs birthday I think why would anyone pay that much when they can go get a cake at the grocery store for 25 of course im not complaing custom work to sloppy thrown togther kits but all of you are saying that people are willing to pay 50 and 60 dollars for cakes?

Hi everybody and thanks for you comments and opinions!! I really needed them! Thanks for the formula Narie... sounds about right! Of course, if people is willing to pay more... why not? Also thanks Formerbuckeye for sharing your prices with me since we are in the same state, very cute cake by the way! I think I will ask about $70-$75 for this first one and I guess we'll see what the lady says! She also realizes that this is not a cake from Walmart or a supermarket bakery, she told me she did not want that, that she wanted something more personalized so I guess she has an idea that this will not be that cheap. By the way, today I went grocery shopping at my local super Walmart, and guess what... a 2 tiered cake, all buttercream, 3" tall, first tier 6", second tier 8", they say it serves 68 people, they wanted $88 for it, NO FONDANT at all. And they used the DecoPac plastic toys for decorations. And a 3 tiered cake, 6", 8" and 10", serves 110, they wanted $148 for it. Again, no fondant! So I guess my prices are VERY reasonable compared to Walmart and we just can't compare a Walmart cake (not that there is anything wrong with them, they are actually very yummy) to a custome made cake, with fondant.
Anyway, thanks again to everybody who shared their opinions with me, I really really appreciate!!

That's a good formula, I'm going to remember that.

I was going to say $80. I would pay that.
