I am short 1 lb of butter - can Crisco be used? I know taste will change, and I am running to the store now to get butter any way, but I was just wondering if it would work or if they Crisco would break down the meringue. For future ref.

If the fat in butter doesn't break down the meringue, I doubt shortening would effect it much. It will definitely impact the flavor.
