Hi,
I have been asked to make a "present cake" for a bridal shower using 2 stacked square cakes. The bride would like silk flowers and "real" ribbon instead of fondant used on the cake. Not only have I never made a "present cake" before, I have never used ribbon on a cake and am wondering if someone can give me some help and advice on how to do this. Does the grease from the frosting soak into the ribbon (my frosting is buttercream)? Has anyone ever made this kind of cake before with wire-edged or fabric ribbon? If so, do you have any photos?

Any help would be greatly appreciated!!

Thank you,
Michele

I can't help you as far as the present cake... but the real ribbon I have used on a wedding cake. From what I have found, the buttercream did not soak through and get it greasy in any way. I used satin ribbon. And you can use the buttercream as the "glue" to hold ends together, etc, of the ribbon. It works great. Sorry I couldn't be of more help! Good luck! thumbs_up.gif You'll do great!

Michele,

I use BC to stick the ribbon to the cake, just like Becca said. Since your making it like a present just do it just like you would a real present. Use BC in a few places to get it to stick. Then put the flowers on top of the ribbon. It's easier then you think it is. I have used ribbon before & it does look very nice~ Good luck~

I made a present cake but with fondant ribbon(its in the cake decorating forum). Just bake square cakes and decorate as you would a present.
