From the day I learned to bake and cook, I was told to use margarine for baking and cooking, not butter.

Do you guys use actual butter as the recipe calls for? Or do any of you substitute it for margarine? (which is about a quarter of the price of butter.)

I use real butter- buy in bulk at Sam's and get huge savings that way- but I've read people on here use margarine with good results!

I use both. Some people can't really tell the difference unless they are bakers, people that use only butter or are like Paula Dean.

I use margarine all the time in my NFSC....actually in all my recipes. I never buy butter. I'm a SAHM on a budget! Margarine works just fine for me, I've never had a problem with it. Jodie

I actually halve the butter in the NFSC recipe with half shortening.....I find they spread less andhold more detail that way!.......but I do use real butter instead of margarine.....and I always use salted butter.

Butters are winning!
Is your choice for flavor or texture? (or budget? LOL)

Growing up the oldest of 6 kids during the era where SAHM was the norm, we would NEVER spend that much for 'butter'. I was in my late teens or early 20's before I knew there was such a thing as "real" butter. We refer to any "yellow stick of fat" as butter. The first time I tasted "real" butter, I about gagged. "Sweet, creamery"? Where the heck did THAT description come from? Try "tart and bitter"!

Also the margarine's have come a long way since way back then. More and more non-butter products are tasting more and more like butter.

I've used margarine my entire life ..... and I use the cheapest margarine in the store ..... to me, margarine IS butter.

I think it all depends on what you grew up on .... what you're used to.

I use both... lol

Mostly butter because when I am giving these I do like the flavor (salted not unsalted) if I am making them for the kids or just playing around I use margarine.

Either way the NFSC comes out great. But then I prefer Butter to margarine in everyday uses so I may be biased...
