Its not nice to laugh at your children but I just couldnt help it.

I was coloring fondant for a cake last weekend. My 8 year old DD (who happens to be very sensitive, caring and EMOTIONAL) was sitting at the table with me working on her homework. I was trying to open up a new bottle of orange Americolor but was having trouble getting that silly safety seal off. So I did what every parent tells there children not to do, I used my teeth. Only, things did not go as planned. Instead of the seal coming off easy, it popped off and a quarter of the bottle ended up on my lips and in my mouth.

I thought my daughter has seen what just happened, so when she looked at me, I gave her this freaked out what did I just do look with the orange die running down my face. Only problem is, she did not see what had just happened and though I was bleeding. Being the sensitive, caring, EMOTIONAL child that she is, she jumped up and started to run for the phone to call 911 all the while screaming her head off. (Nothing like staying calm in a fake emergency.)

When I realized what she thought was happening, I started to laugh and told her put the phone down. But by this time, I was laughing pretty hard at the situation not at her. But, she thought I was laughing at her and that I had just played some cruel prank on her. (Im laughing again as I think about this.)

When we all calmed down from the screaming on her part and the laughing on mine, she realized it was an accident and was not a prank. But, she was still pretty mad at me.

So, my question is, does anyone have any funny kids and cake decorating stories to share. We could all use a good laugh every now and then.

THAT'S SO FUNNY. Nice to know how she'd react in a real emergency though! Quick thinker you have there.

icon_lol.gificon_cry.gif I was laughing til I cried - Thank you.
At least you didn't spit out coloring while you were laughing.

When my oldest ds was 3 (maybe 4) I did a wedding cake for my brother in law. I had all the cakes loaded in the back of the Excursion and as I was in the house getting the last few things he started crawling over the seats.

I did not know he did this until we got to the reception hall and was unloading and there I found a size6 kids shoe print in the middle of the base of the cake. icon_cry.gif

I could assemble the cake without it and so we kept that section in the kitchen. Since his shoe never really touched the cake (there was saran wrap over the top) We just cut up that section and had it plated up while they were starting the reception. We only told the relatives we liked what happened and told them what cake was better to eat (the pieces that came off the cake on display icon_smile.gif ) Everyone loved the cake and thought we were super efficient in having it ready to go when they wanted cake!

That is to funny I almost wet myself laughing so hard. I am glad you posted that because my daughter did something Fridaynight. First of all she turned to at the end of March sothat gives you an idea. I was working on a cake that was due Sat am it was a 3d pig that was for a luau theme. I had made mm fondant banana leaves. She was so good and watched me work without bothering me her dad was not at home. So I was really proud of her so when she wanted to play with the left over fondant I let her. She must have been watching everything I did becuause she was rolling out the mm with a rolling pin like mommy. I left her alone for just a minute to go check on the cakes. While I was gone she climbed onto the table to grab the powdered sugar and was tossing it everywhere. My floor, china hutch, table & child were covered in it. To make matters worse she grabed my glass of water and had made paste out of the sugar. Needless to say I could not get mad at her & got some cute pictures out of it. icon_lol.gif

Very funny! Fortunately, neither of my kids have distroyed a cake for a paying customer - but when I first started using fondant - they did do a number on a couple of family cakes.

And, nothing beats the combination of 2 year olds and sugar!

I don't know how funny this is but I have a four year old little boy who is a total terror........every time I bake a cake I have to watch it like a hawk until it's cool enough to wrap up and put out of reach. I found out the hard way that my son like to break off hunks of cake and eat them when I'm not watching. Only thing is...he's very clever about it!!!! He doesn't just stick his finger into the side of the cake and rip a chunk out......oh no, that's what he did when he was like 2...he's much more sophisticated in his cake nabbing now. Now he literally picks up the cake and rips chunks out of the center bottom of the cake.......so when I come running in the kitchen saying..."Don't touch the cake!" He says "I'm just looking mommy!" well, the first time I figured him out was (thank God) at a b-day party here at home!! The cake was hollow in the center!!!!! We cut it and everyone was like "wow.....that must have been some air bubble in that cake batter@!!!!" LOL Well, it was just our family and my in laws and they think he can do no wrong....so we all had a good laugh about it. But now, out of habbit I always lift my cakes up and check the bottom before I frost them!!!!

Very funny- has he outgrown that stage yet? My kids are always wanting the left over parts of the cake after I level it. I caught my 3 year old with a spoon one day trying to level it herslef. When I walked in on her, she said - as she hid the spoon behind her back, "I'm not doing anything mommy."

OMG that is too funny. I cried, laughing so much. Your poor DD, my kids would probably be upset at me too for laughing. Even if it was not at them.
KH - that is too funny. i always see my nieces & nephews (i have 15, plus my 3 kids) picking the back of cakes. trying to get a lick at the icing. Now it bothers me even more, just cause they are messing w/my design. icon_redface.gif

nothing horrible funny...but my 20 month old comes running from wherever he is when I turn on my kitchenaid! LOL!

My 5yo LOVES to play with the left over fondant.

This doesn't have to do with cake decorating but with weird colors in your mouth. When I was a teenager I was eating rainbow nerds. All the diffrent colors had turned my tongue black.
So I went up to my mom and said " my tongue is sore. Do you see anything on it???"

I have never seen anyone pale so quickly.

I felt bad but we did laugh about it.

Well, It is not my child I have a story about but my Grandmother. She passed away before I started decorating and I often wonder what she would have thought of me. Well, anyway, Grandma often baked cakes- in a glass 9x13 with canned icing, One sunday we all show up and started bugging her about eating the cake. She was always so particular about who cut the cake and served it. She was busy and my mom decided to go ahead and serve. The cake wouldn't cut icon_confused.gif Grandma came running into the kitchen laughing and said "well I guess my secret is out now" For years Grandma had been eating hot cake right out of the pan, well with it being rude to serve half eaten cake to guest she crammed enough paper towels into the end of the cake and iced over the whole thing. She just had to be careful she always served from the correct end. icon_lol.gif

The paper towel in the cake story has me in tears!

Right now I am picturing a room filled with little kids - and now old grandma's - throwing sugar everywhere, diggign there little faces into half baked cakes, rolling out fondant on the kitchen floor - all the while singing and laughing.

ha!

cann't remember anymore right now and it makes me upset because every time something happens i think that i will write it down but never do.

My 3 year old loves to help out "decorating" so when I am done with whatever cake I am working on, I give her the bag with the left over frosting and let her go to town on my counter. I usually don't need to make another cake within the time frame so its fine because I can't keep the icing anyways. Well a few weeks ago I had about 3 cakes to make all within a few days of each other, so I put the icing bag, coupler and all, into a bagie and put it into the fridge. I went in to take a shower and my hubby was SUPPOSED to be watching her. I came out of the shower to find frosting on my counter, dishwasher, fridge and floor...all in little (and big blobby)stars. She decorated the whole kitched in size 32 stars in about 5 colors. When I asked hubby, his response was "I thought she was upstairs". Needless to say, he was the one helping her clean the mess up. Not befor wi took pictures though. LOL

Too Cute!

My 2 yr old has a cake addiction as well. Every cake we have ever had--family B-days or friends B-days DD has always put her hands in before the wish...except 1--I had Royal icing flowers drying on the oven door where she can reach. I had only a few extra for breakage...all of a sudden I turned around to catch her stealing flowers...all she had to say was"CANDY MOMMY" as the last flower went into her mouth icon_cry.gif Fortunatly it was for family. The B-day girl said my DD still got to get her hands in it before the wish.

Keep the stories coming this is just so much fun!

I used to have a cat. Yeah.

She was a "sugar-holic." Every time we made coffee, cake---anything sweet---she'd start meowing and yowling. She'd act like the sugar was tuna! She would put her face really close to the sugar filled "whatever," and she'd have this dull look in her eyes like she was drunk. WITH HER MOUTH HALF OPEN--just sniffing and staring at the sugar.

I lost my dear kitty before I started decorating cakes, she died in her sleep one summer evening.

But these days, after decorating "the greatest cake ever," I find myself thinking of the disasters she might have caused, were she still here--and I find myself smiling through the occasional tear.

Still love you, Bandit...

It's funny that you mention pets, you would probly have a diabetic cake if she were still with you. Sorry to hear that she's gone, I know how painful it is to lose a pet. She would have been quite happy with your decorating.

My dogs arn't allowed in the kitchen when I'm decorating - or eating - or pretty much any time. Here's why, when I was making my very first fondant covered cake (so needless to say I was already a little stressed), I got the cake just about completely done and ran out of places to set things, so I sat it on the chair in the kitchen. When I left the room, my collie was being curious and was sniffing then bumped her very wet nose against the side of the cake creating the most perfect dog nose print I have ever seen.

Fortunately, this was a cake for our family new year's eve party so I decided I'd keep the cake and just not serve that half of the cake.

So, I set the cake on the food table in the living room. An hour or so later, I was walking by the cake and noticed all these little holes or dents on the top - I knew what they were - they were little fingers! I went to scold my 2 1/2 year old and she said, "I didn't touch your cake mommy"......turns out, it was my 7 1/2 year old dd.....the same one who was ready to call 911 in the opening story. I never would have dreamed she would have done that.

That was then, now 6 months later my girls know to "NEVER, NEVER, NEVER touch one of mommy's cake!" I reward them with getting to play with thier own fondant and cover their own cakes when I don't have a job to do. Actually, it's a great "punishment tool" for them. "If you don't __________ (fill in the blank) you can't play with icing today." It's amazing how fast they get back on track or do what I ask them to do when I threaten to take away thier cake decorating time!
