Hi,
At the Austin cake show last weekend there was a cute little bird nest cake - picture definitely doesn't do it justice. I thought it would be a fairly easy cake to do for my neighbors. The nest was made from "candied chow mein" noodles.
Can someone please tell me the best way to candy them? It was a great looking nest because of the natural color of the noodles. Do you just make it like rice crispie treats?

Maybe you make it like candied nuts, just replace nuts with noodles. Actually, that sounds pretty good...I might try this myself even if this isn't what you're looking for. There are lots of recipes on the web, just google "candied nuts recipe" and you should get bunches of results.

I'm not sure if this is what you are looking for but I make butterscotch haystacks.....don't have an exact recipe....but I take a bag of the butterscotch morsels and melt them in the microwave and just add the chow mein noodles.....last time I had a bag of the noodles and used almost the whole bag.....then you could just shape them into the nests......hope this helps........Donna
we do the same thing a christmas time, except we use chocolate. We also call them haystacks. We also put nuts on top. I've made the birds nest when I was in school. We used chocolate and shaped them into a nest shape and actually put candies in them like eggs. They were called speckled eggs I think. Small chocolate eggs with a candy shell. Hope this helps.
Thanks for the responses. I've made those candy chow mein clusters with butterscotch and chocolate before. The thing about this cool looking cake was the chow mein noodles just looked like they had a glaze on them to keep them together... they didn't look thickly coated. I'll look up some candied nut recipes and see what I find.
It was a really cute cake at the show. The decorator had marbled fondant covered cake eggs in the nest. I thought it would be cute for little Easter gifts.
