Hey all,
This is a practice cake for my sons communion in May. Itr was my first attempt at drapping. And first attempt with pearl dust.Does it need anything else? Maybe flowers instead of the knots?I do have a topper for the cake its a white cross with a little boy kneeling in front of it.It is stored at my mom so i couldn't put it on the cake to see how it looked.Any comments would be great.TIA......Kelly
Looks like it will be very pretty! I like the drapes. I would do something by the knots, like flowers, or bow or perhaps the cross is all that it will need right there.
i agree, i would do something besides the knots.... but other than that it looks great.
i think its very nice. maybe some lighter blue flowers would look nice or even the same shade of blue/white
great job. the drapes are harder then they look arent they!
congrats to your son, god bless him.
I think Flowers in stead of knots...
Maybe start the drap where the topper will sit on the first teir?
Maybe make some Forget-Me-Not flowers in white with a blue center to cover the knots if you cannot find a flower big enough to cover the end of the draps?
Good Luck - It looks great... I'm a long way off from attempting draps... Sonja
Thanks for the ideas. I also felt the flowers would look a bit better than the knots. The communion is in May so I'll post a final pic. Thanks again.
have you left room for the topper on this attempt?
where will it be placed.
and I vote NOT flowers -- after all it's for a boy not a girl.
a rosette would work -- masculine but not so plain as the knots.
I recently found this photo that I liked. It has a similar idea to what I think you are going for with the drape and knot and cross.

Doug....No i haven't left room on this one for the topper. I will be putting it on the small cake and have the drape fall from the edge.
I have lots of guine pigs here so ill probably try one more with the topper and see about the knots.
Thanks again u all are so great.
If you don't want to use flowers, you could also place another tiny drape on the other side of the knot, like just an inch or so, fan it a little, like it's the end of a sash. Or you could do a tassle, too.
Doug's right - flowers are nice, but not for a boy's cake. Simple and sleek are perfect for a boy.
I think it looks great with the knots - perfect for a young boy. Your draping is very elegant - it will be a beautiful cake for him. PAT
Looks good, I took a look at the picture Melissa suggested and she is right. The knots are good for a boy.
Good luck with your cake and congrats to your son.
Knots are good for a boy, but if you want the cake to look polished and clean, tucking is the way to do that. Make your drapping peices long enough to reach the edge of the cake layers, and then simply tuck the ends into the egdges and bottom of the cake. This will solve your "what to do" problem and make the cake look more polished and uniform. On the top of the cake, since you have a topper, sit the topper on the edge of the drape to cover the end. Vwallah!!!! Cake complete!!
Just sayin'....tucking is easier and would make a cleaner looking cake than simply laying the ends on and making something to cover them up.
Just a thought....
Oh my goodness Hon!, it turn out ever so beautiful and I love the look of reversing the colors. You did a outstanding job on this cake .
God Bless,
Sharon
