I have heard that to make black fondant you start with chocolate and then add the black paste. I am trying MMF for the first time. Also, I am planning on making a tuxedo style groom's cake. Now, I have been warned that if you use too much black paste, it will taste bitter and that eating it will leave your mouth black. Is this true? The wedding is not until July 21, 2006 and now the bride has her heart set on my Prince Charlie Jacket design groom's cake for a surprise for the groom. Any suggestions? Many thanks - Deb

I just tint my white fondant black - but I'm sure you could start w/ chocolate. USE GLOVES! Or you'll stain your hands.

Yes it does leave your mouth black but I think that the tuxedo cakes are wonderful and more of a centerpiece. I wouldn't worry about the black mouth. If you put some cocoa in first then add black you won't use as much.

Also, I think alot of people take the fondant off because it is so sweet.

mmf is hard to tint, I put my darker colors in when the marshmellows are melted, before I add the sugar, it helps so you do not have to break your hand kneeding so much...

SatinIce makes a black fondant - much easier than tinting MMF, IMO. I have a fire helmet cake in my pictures that I used it on.

So cakesondemand....what was your opinion of the color mist....I need to make a darth vader cake for my son out of chocolate buttercream....do you think the color mist would work or I'm I better off just giving everyone a black mouth?

I don't think the spray would give you the righ black
If you are using chocolate bc it shouldn't take as much black as it would if using white bc. If it was me I would just tint the chocolate BC to black. Remember you just need to get a charcol gray and it will turn black just let it sit for a while.
