HELLLLLLO CAKE PEOPLE

icon_cool.gif

I'm looking to find out about the Tool you couldn't live without. The one that has been by your side through the good and the bad..... Or the one that has helped you do those fancy tricks that you are known for..... The tool that you would recommend to everyone because they just couldn't do cake decorating without it..... The strange obscure tool that others may not know about.

Just a newbie trying to swim through all the frosting to get to the other side.

Thanks and have a happy day icon_smile.gif

Floss...I use it to level my cakes and tort them. I seem to have better luck using it than a leveler.
Yep just waxed floss is my most favorite tool.

There are several tools that I love but my most favorite is my small angled spatular with the wooden handle.

I think the most unique one that i have heard of is the wall paper smoother (wider one).

You lightly mist the top of your sheet cake (with water) hold the smother at a 45 degree angle and lightly drag across cake . Then turn cake and go the other way across..... It gives a nice flat smooth top.

Hmmm, I have so many I love. Well definitely my Silicone pad to roll out fondant, pie crust and cookie dough, it is awesome. I used the lame plastic guide Wilton has in class to roll out fondant, it doesn't even compare to my silpat.

I also love my rolling pin, which is out of my kids block set. Just a round long block, about the same diameter as the wilton ones for fondant.

Lastly, my Viva papertowels, couldn't live without them. Nothing works better to smooth a cake for me!

My fav is a pair of tweezers that are very long and have ridges on the end. They are great for putting little pearls on things and pushing down little hidden areas on fondant bows/flowers after they are on the cake. My fingers always leave a mark. I got them in a medical supply store for 15 dollars and they go right into the dishwasher too!

I am boring! The first thing that comes to mind is my Kitchenaid! Guess I could have mixed all those thousand+ cakes over the last 15 years without it; but I can't imagine. Can't imagine having to use a hand-mixer to make buttercream either. Best present I ever got! Thanks Mom and Dad!

Then I'd say toothpick! I am lost when doing a cake and realize I've run out of toothpicks! icon_smile.gif

Large angled spatula...yep. Would hate to try to ice the top of my cake with the flat, flimsy one I have.

Pitcher, hot, hot water and a paper towel? icon_smile.gif For getting my icing smooth.

Tips 3, 16, 104, 21, 32. I know their numbers by heart. I have many tips; these are the workers around here.

Kitchen Aid and when I first got married i had one and used my portable because it was easier to get out than to lift the KA. We didn't have room for it to sit out. Boy was that dumb! Oh well I know better now many years later and a couple KA's later.

Straight and angled spatula and stainless steel mini mixing bowls for colors.

Long serrated knife to level the cakes when still in the pans.

I'm a newbie, BUT I have noticed I use the long angled spatula alot-to ice and load up the bags to decorate. LOL!

Oh and the other best I love is the couplers. I love the idea of changing tips easily and fast.

Another of course if my KitchenAid mixer. I just got it about 3 wks ago and I love it!

One of my favorite gadgets is an empty pringle portatoe chip can. Perfet size to drop your deorating bag into for refilling. Bag folds down the side, fill her up, like a second set of hands

in the bakery we have a dewalt power drill that has a mixing attachment similar to what you would use to mix dty wall mud with and I can mix a 5 gallon bucket of icing at a time. only cost about $300. versus a huge mixer costing $6000. doesn't take up as much room and I can take it with me places.

I wouldn't want to be without my Kitchen Aid mixer. I love being able to set it to mixing and do other preps. Then there's my levelers, quick, easy and worth the $. I love Viva towels and the handy dandy sculpting tool I use for the faux fondant is sooo neat! Can't get cheaper than cutting it from a 2 liter bottle. I'll quit now.....Ü

heavenlys -

HAHAHA! I never would have thought of the power drill with mixer option - brilliant! (my hubby and I used that to do the mud and grout when we tiled our last kitchen) I'll keep that in mind when/if I ever have a project that large

Interfacing material from the fabric section. It works so much better than Viva (for me) to get cakes super smooth. All you have to do is throw it in the washing machine and use it again!

The very large silicone mat for rolling fondant- don't even have to use cornstarch, confectioner's sugar or crisco or whatever to roll it out.

Seriously, I really like the large angled spatula that wilton makes. I just got it recently and it makes frosting cakes SO much easier.

3 things:

- my favorite 6-inch straight spatula that i got from my grandmother's kitchen (i panicked when i thought i lost it last december. it only costs like $3 to replace it but it's so old that the blade has thinned out and i like my blades as thin as possible)

- my cake turntable

- my kitchenaid

Now this is a fantastic idea!!! I have small hands and filling the bags is always a chore for me. I'm gonna have to force myself to eat all the chips in a pringles can so I can use it icon_biggrin.gif

I don't have a Pringles can, but I use a large cup. Like the ones you get when you order a coke at a pizza joint. I think I paid $1 for it. It's perfect!!! Just like Sandie said, you sit the bag in the cup and fold the ends over the rim and put the icing in - NO MESS!!

Saran Wrap is wonderful! When I have large amounts of fillings, I bag them with the saran wrap. I put a large amount in the center of the saran wrap, fold it up like a piece of candy, and twist off both ends and then throw them in the fridge until I need them. Then I just snip off one end, put it in the pastry bag, and it's ready to go!!
