I am in the process of trying to cover two tiers of a three tier miniature cake for a demonstration I have tomorrow and my MMF is DRY AND CRACKING just trying to roll it out. I made it Tuesday night and have kept it sealed until now. I'm getting really close to pulling off the one tier I have done (which is totally bad) and just icing it in buttercream. Everyone is expecting a fondant demo but it's just so bad!!!

What could be causing this problem! I'm so frustrated!!! icon_cry.gificon_cry.gificon_cry.gif

I'm no expert on this by any means but after reading what others have said on here, perhaps you could try kneading it with a little crisco.

could be the humidity or the lack thereof
have you tried the ol crisco trick yet?

yep, sounds like you need to add some crisco, or whatever brand of shortening except butter flavor.
keep away from the corn starch and p. sugar too and knead in the shortening while it's a tad warm. You'll feel it and know.

With ANY fondant, if it's dry: knead in shortening. When sticky, knead in confectioners sugar.

It may take more than a little shortening, but what I do is coat my hands pretty good and knead it in. Continue to do this until the fondant is pliable. Fondant is not a perfect medium and sometimes there will be problems. Don't panic. It usually can be saved.

Thank you all very much! I'm not quite satisfied with this one as I am the first because I ran out of time to do extra fondant roses to put on the cake. All I have are three to put on top and that's it! Boo Hoo!!!

You also might try putting it in the microwave for a few seconds. That will soften it up and make it much more easy to work with!

That's EXACTLY what I was going to say. I've done that with my MMF and it works like a charm. After all, it is marshmallows.

cakemommy, are you going to share a picture of the cake with us after you have finished it?

Well, I'm getting ready to post the two cakes. I forgot my camera both days so the pink cake is taken with someone else's digital camera and the second cake was taken with my camera phone so you really can't see anything on it but the design is the same as the pink! I'm so bummed that I forgot my camera both days even though I kept telling myself not to forget it!

I'm not really happy with either cake but then again we are our own worst critic! Maybe it was because I had to decorate it in front of about 40 people each day!
