You could try confectioner's glaze. I use that a lot to make a varnished wood look or a new-leather look.

Rubbing the pieces with shortening might give it a shine too. Not sure though since I've never tried it.

That's a good idea and if you put it on thin enough and let it set long enough, it'll dry too so no sticky mess.
