Don't give up....
When I took the classes.... I made my roses backwards....I couldn't make them the way the instructor wanted me to for the life of me...
I love simple, elegant cakes the best... I just wish more people would go that route when ordering..

I can totally sympathize!
I'm in Wilton's class ll and I can't make a rose to save my life. I thought....ok no real tragedy here, I prefer daisies anyway. And if all else fails I can always turn to fondant roses icon_biggrin.gif

Last Tuesday we started making daisies .....OMG! I could make one decent daisy! I went home and sat at my kitchen table (took me 2 hours) until I made a daisy. My technique is slightly different than my instructors, but I really like my daisies. I want to do a cake covered in them!
It's easier for me to tackle one flower at a time. I just made a rose using a fondant base(hersey kiss) and royal icing for the petals. It looks better. For some reason my roses collapse and look flat??

Hang in there!

Good Luck, and keep us posted, as I'm one who tried it, and couldn't do it, so now I just shun cakes with flowers. I've never taken any of the courses, that might help huh? Let us know once ya suceed.

I agree with what everyone has said... It definately takes practice! When I took course 2 all my daisies looked like they were starved for sunlight!! I still can't make them very well but I have fun trying.

I have come to the realization that I am a rose failure. I've accepted it ane moved on. One day when I'm paid a million dollars to decorate a cake covered with 100 roses, I'll try again. Until then, PBBT! Who needs them????

Awww, but T, you've only been doing this for what, 4 months? You gotta give yourself more time to practice. icon_smile.gif

I haven't the other responses, so sorry if this has been said.

Practice (they will say).

Hehe! BC flowers aren't my deal. But I can make a mean fondant/GP rose. And they are the ones that look real anyway!!! Good luck!

Izzybee, I'm a lefty and I have the left-handed tips. For me they really didn't make a difference. It was just lots of practice. Golfgirl, I'm with you! If I have time I'd rather give the customer gumpaste roses - and I won't even charge extra because I'd prefer to make them to icing roses! I thought i was the only one!

The roses I mastered with a lot of practice. You go! Good for you. Practice, practice....I loved my Wilton classes so much I am now a Wilton instructor. However, doing my cakes.....there isn't a flower on anyone of them icon_eek.gif

It does take practice. Another thing I learned by mistake is to never, ever have coffee, soda, or tea before. Your hands get to shakey and it doesn't work.

It took me a few weeks of practice. I made a batch of all crisco buttercream and used it over, and over, and over until I had it down.

Poor your!

Alwzeta, don't worry about it. I remember when I started my course II. I was really excited...... and then it came royal icing. Our teacher showed us how to make the mum and for the life of me, I couldn't make mine look at all like the one she showed. My petals would break, or would be different sizes... I went home really discouraged and thought... man, after all the investment, what if I can't ever learn how to make these flowers. So I started practicing, and practicing, and practicing... and I got better. My teacher even congratulated me on my final cake for couse II. So hang in there and you'll see how it will get easier. thumbs_up.gif

Inma

Ps: I'll include my take on the cake we had to do for the end of Wilton Class II

Hi all,
It's me again. I know you are tired of me but I am so excited(again). I went to my first class of Wilton III last night and it went well. I made my buttercream icing and I didn't beat it to a quick painful death and it had the right consistency. My buttercream has been to soft. I was able to do all my tasks for last night. I am so happy. I will keep you posted and I will post pictures soon. When I learn how. That's another post. thumbs_up.gif
